Social Security Number

Hi.

Please let me know whether is best to apply for Social Security Card for my fiancé directly at the Social Security office, or on I-485 and I-765?

Also, If applying for the SS number using the two forms, is it OK to apply on both the I-485 and I-765 forms, or only apply on one form?

Is there a conflict if SS is applied on both forms?

Thank you for your help.

Fiancé or spouse?

As a fiancé, I don't believe she can get SSN just yet. In fact, you cannot adjust her status if you're not married yet.

Cannot recommend what's best, since I didn't get the SSN via AOS.

My understanding is, it would be quicker to do via completing forms, otherwise SSA would only issue SSN when your spouse gets her EAD.

I would think, if you send I-485 together with I-765 in one packet, there should be no problem checking the boxes requesting SSN on both forms.

The very best thing is to apply after marriage but prior to the expiry of the I-94.  I believe it needs to be done >14 days prior.

This is what we did (advice read here on VJ) and my spouse had his SSN long before any of the forms were processed.

K1's can get a SSN and it is best to get the SSN before marriage.

It is recommended to apply before marriage because it has happened that the SS office doesn't know what the rules are for K1's and will say marriage voided the K1 and refuse to issue a SSN. Also when doing a name change if that applies to some that is enough to mess things up too as the staff does not always know to apply in the name of the visa. New name for the first time can mess things up.

Always, start asap for the SSN as you are limited on time.
