Changing name on Brazilian Passport at Consulate

My wife called the Consulate here in Houston yesterday. They told her she'd need our marriage license, my birth certifite (yep, mine), $20 and they would need her birth certificate. The catch is that her birth certificate has to have been certified in the last 6 months.

Now I can only assume this person knows what they are talking about. But has anyone else had their name on the Passport changed after marriage at the Brazilian Consulate? What was your experience?

Hi Joey,

I changed my name after arriving in the US. I went to a "consulado itinerante" here in Phoenix (once a year the consulate sets up shop here to take care of consular issues for the residents of Arizona). First you have to register your marriage at the consulate and then they will issue her a new passport with the new name. These are two separate things and the last depends on the first. That's why they need your birth certificate, hers and the original marriage license. I guess they need a new one because they need to know that she hasn't changed her name there yet. It's easy for someone in her family to get one for her in Brazil and send to you guys. I hope this helps!

I came to USA on k1 visa, I got married and I will change my name after I receive my greencard cause I applied AOS using married name.

My marriage license does not show my married name.

I will change my Brazilian passport after I receive my Greencard, will be my first document using married name.

Can I have problems to come back to USA using my passport with my single name and Advance Parole with married name???

UPDATE: We got our marriage documented at the Brasilian Consulate. The Consulate also put a stamp inside her passport with the married name. We thought they were going to replace it. However, they would not replace the Passport until it expires. Good enough for us!

Regarding your return to the US, keep your US marriage certificate with you. My wife had no problems on her first re-entry last year. She showed the Green card (she had AP also!) with married name and her Brazilian passport. That was enough.
