Read the I-90 instructions, surrendering the card was/ is a requirement, be it by paper filing or online.
But don’t stress over that..they will issue an RFE for you to return the card , when they get around to looking at the case.

But make an InfoPass and go get your stamp.

Item Number 2.d. My existing card has incorrect data because of Department of Homeland Security error. Select this reason if your card has incorrect data and the error was caused by DHS. Attach the original Permanent Resident Card issued with the incorrect data. A copy of the card is not acceptable in this case.

do you think it’s a good idea to file i-751 even with a pending i-90 , though i still have the original GC with the incorrect category printed on it, which expires march 2023

You were married for more than 2 years when you entered the US.  There is no requirement to file an I-751.  Just wait for them to process the I-90, and send you the correct Green card.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

You should not file the I-751.
Use the next 4 months to launch a Get it Done campaign, even if you have to put USCIS on speed dial . ..and study closely what reasons qualify for expedite ( usually potential job loss for no plastic card or expiration)

When you go in for the I-551 stamp, they may take your original card there in office, and verify the error. Doing this may actually speed up the I-90 process. Then again, it will probably do nothing, but I would get the stamp.

Had the same thing happen with Kid2 - should have been a 10yr GC, was issued a 2 year.  Filed I-90, actually got the replacement card with a 10yr expiration and still somehow ended up with a NOA to file I-751 for the 2yr GC that was replaced with the 10yr.  Didn't bother and haven't had any issues.

I'd go get the stamp.  The systems don't work together and cause confusion for the people just trying to live their lives in legal status!

Your mission was to LODGE A SERVICE REQUEST and also file an EXPEDITE along with getting an INFOPASS appointment to go for stamp….

If you expected anything different than the recent notice, then your expectations are misplaced.

Good Luck

Don't file the I-751.  There is no reason for you to do so. You already know they sent you the wrong card.
