US Citizenship

Well Indonesia at the moment doesn't recognize dual citizenship, so I don't really know what we plan to do. I guess it kind of depends how the future pans out. My Dad moved here from Sweden 20 years ago, and he has yet to apply for US Citizenship, I don't think he ever will. Though Sweden at least does recognize dual citizenship, well at least now anyway, they only changed the laws a few years ago.

I will get Citizenship as soon as i'm eligible, rather than having to keep renewing a green card. I want to get to the point in my life, where I never, ever have to fill out another USCIS form and wait for another petition to be approved, and they can't deny me entry at the border no matter how long i've been away.

We plan to move to Australia in a couple of years, and raise a family there. They of course would have both passports from birth, and i'd like my kids to experience living in the US at some point in their lives. I'd hate it if i lost my greencard by being away from the US for too long, and then my kids decide they want to live their lives here. I'd have to start all over again! Ugggggghhhhhhhh!!

I wouldn't take US citizenship though if it meant giving up my Australian one, which it doesn't.

For me, naturalisation gave me a choice of marriage approaches not available on GC (check the FB-2A cutoff-dates, none are past 2002-07-22).

Answering for my husband, who will become an American citizen. He can actually remain as a dual national, and when I told him this, he looked at me oddly and asked, "Why?" We've discussed a lot of reasons why, but this is really his choice.

We haven't decided because Indonesia does not allow dual citizenship and I will have property in Indonesia. For now, I am not giving up my Indonesian citizenship.

Everyone that has the opportunity to become a citizen should really look at the benefit of voting because the only way we you have a voice is with the ability to vote.

One person here from Russia said his loyalty is with Russia, one thing to consider is that if you get a greencard you have to register with selective services. If you are drafted you will have to serve in the military. If we ever have a war with your country of origin in the future and you do not have US citizenship there is always the possibility of internment camps like the US had during WWII. I know people may think the US is past that point in history but we all know history can repeat itsself. The Patriot Act changed alot of laws in the US about our rights especially during wartimes. The power of the civil rights groups are not absolute, if our government wants to stop allowing them from doing anything they can very easily.

The US is a great country and as a great country we have to protect it, this will be done at any cost if the right people in power decide to do it.

I've told Gareth that, since the UK allows dual citizenship and doesn't restrict dual citizens in any way, that if he's eligible but doesn't apply ... he's not allowed to complain about US politics anymore. Since he could be doing his part to change it but is refusing to.

He's leaning towards getting it--what tipped him over the edge was realizing that he doesn't believe in the UK's citizenship oath either. In fact, he believes in the US's (swearing allegiance to the Constitution) more than the UK's (swearing allegiance to the Queen), and he *is* a UK citizen.

i will apply for us citizenship once im eligible to, still waiting for my fiancee visa to be issued. but just because germany allows dual citizenship. if it would be german OR american i would stay german. just dont want to risk anything, you never know what can happen!plus we definately want to move to germany one day......

My answer is yes... it's simpler, my husband was born here and I chose to spend the rest of my life with him. If I didn't get citizenship there's always that chance that Something Bad would happen and I'd have to leave the country - I want the security of knowing that I can't be legally separated from my husband. And lastly, Australia doesn't recognize a marriage performed overseas unless you jump through a hell of a lot of hoops that I can't be bothered with - if they don't even want to let me change my name/get a new passport without that much hassle, they obviously don't care. I'll get US citizenship, get a US passport, and be done with it.

Well, make sure you get your "Beibehaltungsgenehmigung" before you file for U.S. citizenship. Otherwise, the German citizenship is gone....

A big advantage of dual citizenship is that if you are ever in a foreign country that does not like Americans you will have your non US passport to be able to use. Remember Iran in the late 70's? They only kidknapped US citizens.

My wife will become a dual citizen when she is eligable.

Does anyone know the laws concerning an LPR for collecting SSI at retirement age? and also Medicare at retirement age?
