Leave middle name off of U.S. passport?

Hi everyone,

 

My husband will have his oath ceremony soon, and we will be applying for his passport shortly after that.  His foreign passport does not include his middle name.  His green card has his middle initial only.  I was reading the thread about which passport to use when travelling, and it has occured to me that it would probably be beneficial if the name on both passports match exactly so that his flight reservation will match his passport exactly, no matter which one he travels with.

 

I am wondering if anyone here has left their middle name off of the U.S. passport application.  I have read online that a middle initial is acceptable instead of the full middle name, but I am wondering if the middle name is strictly necessary.  If anyone has first-hand experience on this topic, I would appreciate it.  Thanks in advance!

Why not look up DS-11 and see what's listed for instructions  ie how to complete passport application? That should give you guidelines on how to fill it out. 

 

For travel, stick with one passport for all travel especially if leaving/entering US. Should normally be your US passport.

The person may be required to use their non-US passport to enter a country of their second citizenship.

That's why I said leaving/entering the US. Which passport they use at their destination (if they have non-US one) is their decision.

Traveling with Dual Nationals all the time I can recommend having the same name (or as close as possible) on each passport simplifies things.

Got the passport yesterday.  We ended up using his full middle name on the application.  The instructions said the name should be "consistent with your proof of citizenship and identification".  We purchased airline tickets before we even had the naturalization certificate in hand, and I wasn't sure how his name would appear on the certificate; his green card only had his middle initial, not the full name, but correspondence from USCIS contained his middle name.  So I took a guess that the nat cert would have his full middle name, and booked his flight that way.

 

The naturalization certificate did contain his full middle name, the same as his driver's license, so that is what we used on the passport application, and that is what his new passport shows.  He has to renew his foreign passport next year, so maybe it will be possible to add his middle name to his foreign passport so that they match exactly in the future.
