So I've finally gone through the chore of changing my name - I've done my ss card and license and just sent off my passport yesterday.

As the Sponsor/Petitioner do I have any paperwork that needs to be done with USCIS for this??

None for name change.  Only required to notify USCIS when you change address.

I wonder what happens at POE if either of the following happens:

  • the petitioner and beneficiary travel together, and CBP wonders why the beneficiary's travel companion is not the person named as petitioner in the visa
  • the beneficiary travels alone, and CBP looks up the name of petitioner named in the visa, and finds that that person does not exist any more

I've my doubts that a visa listing a defunct name of a petitioner can be used to enter the U.S., but I am interested in learning a source or experience that says I am wrong.

Otherwise, I do think USCIS and the Department of State need to be notified.

Spouse visas (and other IVs) do not list petitioner's name.

Yes, this is what I'm worried about... I kept my maiden name & added my husband's surname as well - the CBP officer would have to be pretty silly not to put two and two together but you never know with CBP. I am also filling out the paperwork for a change of address since we just moved and I was planning on filing it out under my new name. I was worried this would cause confusion but surely with my name changed on my social security they will put the pieces together 🤔

You mention in your other thread that your husband already entered the US and also got his green card.  After the immigrant's first US entry on the visa, CBP would not care about the petitioner.  Now that your husband is an LPR, CBP would not even care if he is still married or not, let alone care about his spouse's name.

I had missed that the beneficiary has attained LPR status.

The petitioner should notify the USCIS of the name change when the petitioner needs to file I-865 (change of address of a financial sponsor who signed I-864). I would include a copy of the change of name document.

Yes, he arrived in June. We have been married less than 2 years though so we will have to apply to remove conditions in 2024. What do you propose as a change of name document, usually this is just your marriage certificate which they already have. Do you think a copy of my new ID and a letter suffice?
