Question - Translating Documents

When sending documents to USCIS (such as a divorce decree in Spanish) is this something I need to have a certified translation of or can I translate it myself?

Should I include both the English and Spanish copies or does USCIS only need the English copy?

You can translate documents yourself if you are fluent in both languages.  You must attach or include the following statement.  USCIS needs both the foreign document as well as the English translation.

While it's true you can translate yourself, if you know somebody who speaks Spanish and English fluently, let them translate it.

 

Also, when I did translations for my docs from foreign language, I used an online service. It cost me like $39. It shouldn't break your bank, though I don't know how much it costs nowadays.

Do we need every single Ecuadorian document translated to English before the interview? I am surprised the NVC would accept the documents if they were not "interview-ready."

Are you awaiting to interview in Ecuador or in the US?

If the interview is taking place in Ecuador, then you do not need to translate any docs that are in Spanish because the country's national language is Spanish. If you have any docs that are in a language other than Spanish or English then those would have to be translated, If you are doing the interview in the US, then you will need to translate any document currently in Spanish into English.

 

When my husband did his K1 interview in Nicaragua we didn't have to translate anything (his police cert, birth cert, our chats which were in English). When submitting his application for greencard (I130) stateside, I translated his birth cert. That was the only thing needed translating in our particular case but if there was anything else like a divorce decree in Spanish then I would have had to translate that as well.

I found inexpensive certified translators from Pakistan on Fiverr.com. Was like $5 per page. Multiple language options. Was 2 day turn around.

 

Even though I could have done it, at that price it was easier to have someone else handle it.
