This has been obvious for decades to anyone who crunched the numbers, but the fantasy of recycling plastic proved irresistible to generations of environmentalists and politicians.  They preached it to children, mandated it for adults, and bludgeoned municipalities and virtue-signaling corporations into wasting vast sums—probably hundreds of billions of dollars worldwide—on an enterprise that has been harmful to the environment as well as to humanity.  [...]

best thing to do is use paper bags instead of plastic - easily made out of recycled cardboard and they biodegrade.

There is even biodegradable / compostable plastic.  It does require high heat … should be easily achievable in commercial facilities in the sun belt in the summer … attics in homes in parts of California, AZ, NM, TX will hit 160 degrees so a commercial outlet should be able pull it off without much electricity

Rules recently went into place that removed plastic bags from stores but the stores themselves did not offer any alternatives. We are lucky to find anywhere that offers small paper bags.  I bought reusable and washable bags that fold up very nicely into my purse.

Exactly.  We should just try not to use plastic as much as possible.  In the Philippines it's a huge problem

Did you know that the term Her face is plastic is a Filipino term. Referring to someone that presents one way in public but is in fact very different

I remember reading a report that many reusable bags are actually bought and used singularly. I do use them repeatedly but like the free ones for rubbish. Otherwise I have to buy plastic liners....

 

Plastic is down cycled to the extent it can be not recycled. Only some plastics can be practically.

That's the reason why I like the reusable washable bags. They are roomy and hold plenty of weight, small and compact enough to be carried in a purse or pockets, and if dirty from meat can easily be washed because they are poly/nylon fabric. I've used regular plastic bags still available at some stores as bin liners for years. As nice as paper bags can be, they cannot hold the same amount of weight as fabric can.
