ADIT Stamp Mailed?

So I contacted USCIS to request a stamp because my extension letter expires Dec 18th and I'm leaving country on Dec 16th. 

 

About 4 days later I spoke to a representative with USCIS and they said I don't need to go to the office and they'll mail it to my address? Is this new? I got a confirmation email saying USCIS has granted your request and created temporary evidence of your legal status on the Form I-94 with a temporary I-551 stamp.

 

Still waiting for it to arrive in the mail, but just wanted to ask if this is a policy change? I've never heard of it before and thought you had to go to the office in all circumstances.

Would be odd, especially given an I-551 on an I-94 usually requires passport photos ...plus the security risks of just mailing out proof of LPR status without a photo (remember the mailed extension letter is useless without being accompanied by the expired card) for the alien to staple in their passport themselves.....but this would be a welcome change instead of the annual shenanigans for the stupid stamp.

If biometrics were waived on the I-90 / I-751, nothing prevents USCIS from using the digital photo on file.  If biometrics weren’t waived, nothing prevents USCIS from using the newer digital photo on file.

At risk of sounding stupid here, but I'm confused because PR's don't have I-94's. Someone who knows, teach me!  

 

Maybe the I-797 has changed to incorporate a detachable bottom portion like the I-129's for work visas?  All the relevant information was contained within that bottom 1/3 of the paper, but it was easy to fold and staple into the ole passport.  The other 2/3 had to stay home, filed.

There is no requirement for resident aliens to have a valid foreign passport. 

An I-551 is usually stamped in a valid passport - it can't be stamped into an expired/cancelled passport.

Therefore, for people who don't have a valid foreign passport, USCIS also offers the option of creating an I-551 stamp for someone who requires proof of their status, on a portion of an I-94. It's just utlising the I-94 for a slightly different purpose, as proof of permanent residence, not of lawful presence on a visa.

It's being mailed as signed UPS shipping. Arrival date is tomorrow by 7PM. I'm also equally as confused, maybe it could be related to the hurricane in FL?

As an LPR I had  I-94s issued. With an accurate travel history. It was accurate enough that I used it for naturalization to double check my own travel records.

 

For my wife it is a mixed bag. No I-94 for her current passport. One I-94 for her old passport. No previous travel history recorded.

Wonder how this works for Venezuelans who cannot get a new passport but are in the US on the "extended 5 year validity" expired passport.

The stamp arrived on an CBP I-94 card, like below. Valid till 10/26/2023. Came with an accompanying letter from the USCIS Fort Myers field office. Honestly I don't know if it's because of the hurricane, or maybe the office is just overwhelmed with appointments? But I also live in Orlando, so it's weird I received the letter from Fort Myers too.

Ok, but it can't be exactly like that, as that one is pictured with an admission stamp - not an I-551 stamp. When you receive one of those stamps in your passport upon entry into the US as a permanent resident, it is accompanied by LPR or ARC, but neither of those annotations confer proof of current status for future boardings to the US, which is what the I-551 stamp is for. 

 

Please post a pic of the front & back (with your info edited out, obviously) so we can see exactly what they have sent you. 

Sending one of these out by mail IS new, and something that collectively I am fairly sure no-one has heard of or experienced before on here.  

The I-94 as proof of PR status is by itself also fairly rare, and not even pictured in the carrier information guide! I've never seen one, I just know the guidance for an appointment to obtain one specifically says you have to bring photos (indeed, as referenced HERE  in the I-9 guidance for example, with "USCIS uses either an I-551 stamp or a temporary I-551 printed notation on a machine-readable immigrant visa (MRIV) to indicate temporary evidence of lawful permanent residence. Sometimes, if no foreign passport is available, USCIS will place the I-551 stamp on a Form I-94 and affix a photograph of the bearer to the form. This document is considered a receipt.." )

 

I'm also curious as to what the letter states!

We are all sick of the annual appointment merry go round for these stupid stamps so any improvement on that, however minor, is welcomed.
