Green card lost, can't get an ADIT stamp / I-551 proof

This is a last attempt to help my situation - my green card was lost in August and I've filed for a new one not a month later. Now I have requested an infopass appointment because my work contract is expiring and I had plans to travel internationally but there are no appointments available.

So I already paid over 500 dollars for a replacement card which takes over a year now somehow to be produced. Then to ameliorate this situation USCIS offers a stamp that it's impossible to get? That's it?? I tried for an emergency appointment and received no callback, I escalated to tier 2 and was told to wait because I am still in line. So #### me right? Doesn't matter I'm about to lose income, health insurance and thousands of dollars in a trip planned before all of this happened; doesn't matter I am a fully legal permanent resident because USCIS cannot print a piece of plastic I am now as trapped as I was before getting a green card approved - no EAD, no AP, no renewing drivers license, no nothing.

I contacted my representative in a last ditch attempt but it's two weeks before the election, I am not expecting much - and if truly there are no appointments there isn't much they can do.

My green card happened during the pandemic when getting a SSN appointment was basically impossible, so my SSN still has the "work authorization" mark on it. Also can't travel using that.

If you can collaborate with ideas there are more than welcome. If you want to say "don't lose your green card" please have some empathy. By law I should have a green card with me at all times and the same agency does not provide one.

If you can collaborate with ideas there are more than welcome Enter Mexico on foot from Nogales where a Mexican immigration doesn’t operate, and do a U turn.  Ask CBP for an I-551 stamp.

* USCIS ombudsman

* Walk in to Mexico from Nogales (where Mexico doesn’t have an immigration check point) and so a U turn back to the USA, and request an I-551 stamp

* Walk in to USCIS field offices and ask for a stamp

* Hire an immigration attorney who will file an Administrative Procedures Act lawsuit to force USCIS to give you a stamp or gc

* for travel, you can fly to Canada, go to the Yukon Territory, and enter the USA at Hyder where CBP doesn’t staff the check point.

* depending on your citizenship, you have a non electronic visa waiver for Guam and CNMI and so you can travel to either, and access the mainland of the USA.

Interesting one. How would he prove his status to CBP to request the I-551 stamp? Why would they even let a person without a proof of status into the US?

Thank you

They can enter his A number and compare biometrics.

Just like when you fly to the USA present your face and nothing else and are admitted into the country

Before you try on any of the more elaborate ideas, I would try a walk in first thing Monday morning. Bring a copy of the work contract that's expiring, your SS card, and the receipt for the I-90.

I agree with the suggestions above to first try for a walk-in at your local USCIS office.  If that doesn't work and if you're willing to travel to another office, maybe in another state, ask for an InfoPass at any USCIS office that has available appointments.  The Detroit office seems to be accommodating, based on this VJ member's experience --

Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I will try to go directly into my local office even though I am not very hopeful at this time. I asked to get an appointment at any office when I talked to the last agent and they said it has to be the office at my jurisdiction - this is clearly an agent dependent thing which is even more frustrating. I cannot wait until all my immigration processes are forever done and I never have to deal with USCIS anymore.

Do not buy into anything said over the phone by an agent. It's not always accurate. I believe people got their I-551 stamps from different field offices than ones having their case pending.

  • 1 month later...

Just to close the loop on this in case other people search the forum: going in person is not allowed at my FO, state rep did not reply to my request and I lost my trip and many deposits. No end in sight for not having proof of status so  if I need a drivers license or to travel domestically even it's not looking great. Renewal coming up January but does it even mean anything when the possible "extension" is granted to a now lost green card? Doubt it.

@jackiegringa sorry to hear the hell you're going through. What do you mean by renewal? I-751? Or you already have a 10 year green card and need to file I-90?

Either one is taking over a year nowadays.

I-751 or I-90 receipt on its own is not sufficient for travel or DMV.

Your only choice is that I-551 stamp.

How often do you call USCIS? I would be calling them daily until everybody know my name and have no other way of getting rid of my calls, but to schedule an appointment at local field office.

Did you try going to other field offices? Maybe family member or a friend can give you a ride there.

Sorry by renewal I did mean i-751 ROC. I called them for over three weeks straight, and got the same email four times after a while - no appointments available and we will let you know if it ever opens up. I was at some point in three different callback lines. Tried to get an emergency callback and was also denied because the only travel that would be compelling enough is for a funeral (how nice that if someone dies they allow me to go!) or immediate job offer (I was able to get a contract extension of 5 months, so no "luck" there) or federal/state benefits denial which honestly I don't know what would mean for me as I don't have any benefits in sight.

Because I had multiple callbacks and an emergency callback on file, it did not matter who picked up the phone - they always said you're in line for callback, can't do anything. Next FO is 4-5 hours away and to keep the contract I currently have I cannot miss days of work for a maybe, it would have to be certain. So yeah, I might just have to wait until I lose my job and get an offer or someone in immediate family dies.

@jackiegringa In your I-751 packet I would include the statement saying you're trying to get ADIT stamp without success. Hopefully you documented your attempts (call times, who you spoke to etc).

Maybe that could help, though unlikely.

Do you have a police report for lost green card? I would include copy of that too.
