Medical - Immunizations

For those Filipinas that have gone through the medical process at St. Luke's.

My wife is unable to get her childhood immunization record showing all of the normal immunization given. Have any of you had the same problem and if so did St. Luke's administer all of the childhood immunizations or how was that taken care of?

My wife isn't fond of needles or doctors and I just want to help calm her mind about this process. Thank you for any information you can provide.

My husband HATES needles.  In the end he got all the needed ones (you age out of some, which shortens the list).  Also some are combo shots, so there may be just a few actual injections. It might save you money to see if any place provides free or low cost vaccines in her area and give a document.   They take you at your word when they ask if you’ve had chicken pox.

She will need to get over her fear. She will have to get them. Just tell her stay calm and just look away and don't think about it. If you watch and tense up it is more painful. If you relax you feel almost nothing.

Sorry to hear that.

If she is unable to present proof of immunization, she will be given vaccines that are age-appropriate. Very likely it will be Tdap (whooping cough) and tetanus shots, at the minimum - and all shots on the same day.

I am not a fan of needles myself. When I am due for a vaccine, I always look away when I am being given a shot.

Wishing her the best.

Cost for all the required vaccines (except those for COVID) are already included in the visa medical fee at SLEC Manila.

@top_secret Can I ask your wife's age? I know that they give age-appropriate shots I guess.

She's 30 y/o and got shots for

  • Flu
  • Varicella (maybe could be waived if she said she had chicken pox as a child??)
  • Tdap (combo shot for Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis, in my own experience that's the one that hurts the most the next day)
  • MMR (combo shot for Measles, Mumps, and Rubella)

9 y/o stepdaughter got all of the above, plus shots for Hep B and Polio

Those two were were waived for mom due to "not age appropriate"

That seems like Saint Lukes standard arsenal.

@top_secret thanks for the info. My wife is 35 so I would assume she will get the same.

Really, it's just part of the process.  The easy way is just suck it up, look away and get the shots.  There is a very positive point associated with it.  Immunizations are the very last step and are only given AFTER someone successfully passes the rest of their physical.  So when they call her name to get her shots, it's at that moment she knows the last hurtle has been cleared and she home free for the interview thereafter.

Aside from the ones listed by @top_secret, there will be 1 additional vaccination for your wife -- Hep B.  There was a recent CDC change (became effective just a few months ago) that made Hep B vaccination required for all applicants up to 59 years old.

Varicella vaccination may be waived if your wife had chicken pox before.  The SLEC staff will likely take her word for it, if she had it before.
