Bacon has been raised on a couple of threads recently and it is one of THE things that most brits and US partners do miss from good old blighty. I have looked high and low (less the UK shops that I have yet to find in Tampa) for a similar cut in the US and haven't been able to find it. I even attempted to explain it to a butcher in the vain hope that he would cut some off a pig he had hanging in his shop, but to no avail. Is there another name for this type of cut or do I have to start thinly slicing the ham steaks to get anywhere near. As I said in another thread the thought of giving up those smoked back bacon and egg sandwiches lathered in HP brown sauce and washed down with a strong cup of English Tea (hot with milk) is too much to consider. :crying::crying:

It's been a long time since I've had it, but isn't Canadian bacon kind of close?

Thanks for the steer, I will ask Leigh to go directly to the butchers and ask for some Canadian Bacon to see if that works. Fingers Crossed, life will be complete with the Florida sun, the love of my life and good bacon

God the streaky bacon here sucks. BLECK.

We'll have to find some kind of alternative - maybe the Canadian bacon (although it seems a bit different to me somehow - thinner or something).

I haven't found Canadian bacon to be a good substitute. Nor have I found any back bacon English style in any shop. Your best bet is to buy it online. Once you find somewhere good, stock up your freezer to save on shipping charges. Either way, it ain't gonna be cheap so it may be time to get used to the streaky stuff. Always look at the back of the pack to assess how meaty the strips are, and check ingredients for hidden sugars and too much salt. Most brands have a low sodium kind which is way better.

In my opinion, Canadian bacon is not a good substitute for proper British back bacon. However, they do have another option in Canada which is closer to the mark - its called pmeal bacon. Its pretty darn close to the real deal!

I have to say that we American really miss out by not having variety in bacon here. Its one of my fiance's greatest problems with life here in the US!

Try looking for Irish Bacon, I can get this in my local McCaffreys. However last time I went they had none.... :crying::crying:

I guess the local americans have got a taste for it.

The problem with the common US designation of "Canadian bacon": contrary to the Wiki entry, much of what is sold in US as "Canuck bacon" is actually just ham with a raised pricetag (as anyone who's frequented the Grasmick Forum can state--even one such as me who detests pork).

It is quite legal to bring meat into US so long as it is in a shrink-wrapped, thermocol tray.

If anyone knows of a place in the SF Bay Area where we can get proper back bacon, I know my guy would be most appreciative!

(I happen to like streaky bacon, but I grew up on it. :P )

We have an Irish pub across the street from us that has full Irish breakfast daily - and they use back bacon. Maybe others do in your local area and maybe you can ask who their supplier is.

I don't eat alot of bacon, but when I do I have kind of adjusted to the streaky stuff they have here. I haven't tried to make a bacon sarnie with it yet though and I suspect I would be rather disappointed...

The streaky just isn't "meaty" enough for a sarnie. Now I want one and I can't have one. :(

my husband hates the bacon here. he eats it but complains about it the whole time. he won't even try canadian bacon because he "knows" in his mind it isn't the same. even if it is closer to back bacon. poor man. I wish you all luck on your quest for back bacon.

Life is a ticket to the greatest show on earth.
