Yes - stays at the consulate not the NVC

NVC sets the appointment prior to sending it out.  You can cancel it online.

This thread is a little old, but its on point for us.  We started this process back in the fall of 2021, thinking we'd be packed and headed to the US at this point.  Several delays later, I think we'll be DQ'd this month. Normally I would be elated, but if the interview is scheduled in say February or early March of 2023, ( 5 month +/-) then the latest she could enter would be Late August or early September. This is the issue.  We're here in the Philippines together. If we can postpone the interview to Early April, Aiza can enter after our second wedding anniversary ( (9/19/23) and get a 10 year Green Card.  No additional vetting. No additional expense, which will certainly be $1,000 by then.  It would be worth the wait, but how to do it?  Any thoughts?  Thanks.

It is certainly up to you.  There is a definite value in less hassle and cost in an IR-1 vs a CR-1.  Most people just want to be together that fastest way possible cost and removal of conditions be damned.

Two approaches to consider is:

1) ask the consulate to reschedule

2) to let the NVC do its thing and IF you get a date that means entering before your two year anniversary, do the interview but delay the medical.  The expiration date is based on 6 months from the medical.  I have seen this done in other consulates.  The consulate does the processing and holds it until the medical is complete.

Thanks for the reply.  Aiza and I are in the Philippines together so the delay is no issue.  I just found out the other day that the medical exam date controlled the clock.  I always thought the 6 months was based on visa issue. The question now is will Manila do the interview if the medical is not done? I guess I'll just wait it out and see where we come out for interview date.  If its after April 1, we're ok.  If not, we'll have to buy some time.  Thanks again.

No -- the US embassy in Manila will not allow an applicant to proceed with visa interview without completed medical.

Ask NVC....NOW....to delay the interview until April.  Easy stuff.

Thanks.  I thought that was the case, but was compelled by others to consider it. By the way, Aiza's NBI that was submitted is a year old already.  Would it be advisable to update it prior to the interview?

NBI clearance is valid for 2 years for US immigration purposes, but the interviewing officer may ask for a more recent one.  If you intend to delay the visa interview to next year, best to renew NBI clearance prior to the interview.  Make sure to upload a scan of the updated clearance to CEAC portal under the additional civil documents section.
