Question about visa interview

We have our visa interview scheduled in a couple weeks. My question is whether I (the petitioner) have to attend or whether my wife (the applicant) can attend without me. I have had an urgent change of plans and can't make it on the date the interview is scheduled, and I'm worried that if we reschedule it will push us back a couple months. Can anyone advise me on exactly who has to attend the interview? Thanks!

Only the visa applicant is required to attend the visa interview.  The USC petitioner may or may not be allowed to accompany the applicant, depending on the consulate's policy.  I don't know about Lima, but Manila doesn't allow the petitioner inside the consulate premises due to COVID-related restrictions.

Although I consider the Petitioner's presence in town on the interview day a positive thing, the vast majority of Consular IV units don't let them into the actual Consulate, much less the interview itself.  Guangzhou Consulate used to be in a big office building.  Petitioner waited in the coffee show at the bottom of the up escalator going to the Consulate's offices one floor up.
