Hello all,

I am trying to open a joint bank account at chase with my wife, but they say we can only open it with her maiden name. Although to do this they say we still need a utility bill with that name on it.

What is the best way to do this?

I currently have socal Edison for electricity and Verizon for my phone bill.

I changed her name for her phone number on the account but I don't think it will show up until next month.

Is there a faster option?

Or rather another good bank in socal that doesn't require a utility bill for form of ID?

Thank you!

Go to Bank of America

Immigration journey is not: fast, for the faint at heart, easy, cheap, for the impatient nor right away. If more than 50% of this applies to you, best get off the bus.

Highly unlikely a bank will let her open in her married name. They require the SSN card to be in married name in order to do that and consequently, an ID in that name too. When I came as a K1, we opened one in Bank of America and Citi and they both said it will be in my maiden name despite me having my DL in my married name. They all go by what the SSN card says, including health insurance. It wasn’t a big deal, I changed the name on everything when I got my GC. But yes, BoA was the easiest to open an account in, they didn’t need a utility Bill. If I remember correctly all they need is the passport and they will look at the visa. I did bring other stuff like SSN but really need the bare minimum.

I not s fan of name changes until after  (and never during) naturalization.  My wife wanted to take my name, and I told that if she did she’s on her own as I don’t need the hassle. I will of course help after she naturalizes when it will be dirt simple.

Thank you, so what documents do they require?

I was only asked for PP. I didn't even have SSN

We did first update the foreign spouse's SSN to the married name using marriage certificate, passport, I-94, and AOS NOA1.

You can check our Timeline to see the steps we followed to update the SSN to her married name.

We were then able to open bank accounts, utility bills, driver's license, etc. in her married name using the marriage certificate, SSN, passport, AOS NOA1, driver's license, etc. all before the I-94 expired.

We are still waiting for the EAD, so we can renew her driver's license.

The only extra filing we needed to do was the W-8BEN for the bank, only because she wanted a bank account in her name only.

The answers above are excellent.  In addition, consider talking with smaller banks, to see whether their protocols are less restrictive.  You can always open an account at Chase later.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
