MIL coming for childcare (whether you call it "getting to know her grandchild" or not) is illegal work. You could have paid someone else to do it. Lots of threads on this.

Yep. I wonder what MIL said was the purpose of her visit.
“spending time with my grandchild” or “provide care for a baby”. Two different ways of saying the same which would yield very different results imho.
Still wonder why OP is reluctant to send MIL home earlier. There has to be a reason.

So many toxic people on this forum... Ask somebody from your's MIL country to send medication thru mail. CBP doesn't care about regular medication. You need prescription in US even for ibuprofen 400mg ( but you can buy 1000 pills 200mg without prescription) do

you really think that CBP has time to deal with that?

I don't know if this helps, but maybe you'll find something useful here: https://help.cbp.gov/s/article/Article-777?language=en_US

Good luck and I hope it all works out!

Update:  I am about to head home where I will attempt to get some more information, but apparently the SIL just spoke to the Dr.

She said that the Dr said the plan was for MIL to take the statin for 4 months, then when she returns home she needs blood work done again.  That seems odd to me, so a asked if the Dr knows she is now out of meds and won't be home until Dec 3, and she said yes.  So I don't know. Again, doesn't make much sense to me, but that's what I was just told.

As a Nurse, that seems reasonable to me.  Not every medication works on everyone.  Sometimes, medical science is trial and error.  Statins take a few months to become therapeutic.

Seems some are not aware that in some cultures , here or in home country don’t “ pay” nana, auntie or a host of extended family and friends who pitch .in…….

Even FDA cites exactly OPs MIL facts..as it is a reality

agree with this. only speak on my (asian) culture, many2 grandparents came to US with tourist visa to spend time and taking care of their grand kids. it doesnt count as working. they just wanted to hang out ( or taking care ) with them. it doesnt considered as "working"

simple solution : pay her medical here out of pocket, or move the flight home earlier.

You’ll have to take her to a doctor and pay out of pocket for all of it.   Chalk it up to lessons learned about misuse of visa types.

How would a different visa type have prevented my MIL and SIL from making a mistake about medication quantities?

Not true, CBP has a whole section of their department that looks at all medications, powders, nutrition supplements, etc.... being mailed to the US.  They test and examine it all.  If it is not on their list to enter the US it is destroyed or returned back to the sender at the cost of the sender.
