FFS!
In my opinion, not carrying a GC is much less of a violation than not filing for AOS within 90 days of entering on a K-1 visa.

You can't let that go can you? Jeez.

No, frankly I think it's YOU who can't let anything go. I've been back to VJ for the past 2 weeks--since filing for AOS--and since that time in almost every thread you post, you absolutely have to have the last word. If people don't take your every word as supreme cannon of the land, then you go ape-###### and take on this belligerent attitude. I'm not intimated by you one bit Doc.

Bring it on!

And what's this "FFS" insult directed at Rosa Parks?

Wow. That's more than a little harsh. Can't say I've ever seen any 'belligerence' from Dr LHA, and I'm quite sure he has no interest in 'intimidating' you or anyone else.

2005 - We met

2006 - Filed I-129F

2007 - K-1 issued, moved to US, completed AOS (a busy year, immigration-wise)

2009 - Conditions lifted

2010 - Will be naturalising. Buh-bye, USCIS! smile.png

Here is the original article:

Hopefully this can act as a good reason why people should carry their Green Cards on them at all times.

Tulsa Police arrested him on the complaint of driving a car with an altered vehicle identification number. Hernandez also was cited for not having a driver's license or car insurance. When Hernandez was arrested, he did not have his green card with him.

So a criminal gets arrested for real crimes--driving a stolen vehicle, driving without a license, and not having car insurance--and you want everyone to live in fear because they don't bring their GC with them? Get real! I'd want the immigrant hauled off to jail, even if he carried his GC!

To all the die hards who claim you must have your GC with you, pray tell, what happens if your GC, heaven forbid, is LOST/STOLEN! Then what happens? Please tell me. Do you get arrested the next day when you leave the house? Or do you stay home for the next 3 months until a replacement arrives? Get real!

Get over yourselves!

Read the article. He was held for 6 days without being able to post bail because the immigration officials put a hold on him due to him not being able to prove he was not an illegal alien. If he had his Green Card on him he most likely would have been out of jail within 24 hours.

To all the die hards who claim you must have your GC with you, pray tell, what happens if your GC, heaven forbid, is LOST/STOLEN! Then what happens?

You file an I-90 and carry the receipt notice with you at all times until you get your new one. I would personally recommend carrying a copy of your Welcome Letter during this period as well.

I keep mine with me. If it got lost or stolen, and I was stopped whilst waiting for the replacement, I would say, "It was lost or stolen and I'm waiting for the replacement." Which seems a more reasonable thing to say than, "I decided to leave it at home, despite the requirement to carry it with me."

####### has Rosa Parks got to do with carrying your greencard????

Kez

Do you even now who Rosa Parks is? It's call civil unrest. If the law is unfair/unjust to begin with, you must fight for what's right. And you do that by peacefully not obeying the law. By not carrying a GC, no one is hurt by such action. Thus peaceful protest. Hence the reference to Rosa Parks.

You all need to better educated yourselves on some US history.

But that's not what the law says. It says, "This requirement means that you are not only required to have a currently valid Form I-551 at all times, but also that you must carry your currently valid Form I-551 on your person at all times."

It doesn't allow for your excuse. If you're going to strictly adhere to the law, then you better adhere it all the way.

Gods forbid my husband ever loses his greencard, but if it were to happen... we would immediately file for a replacement and make an info-pass appointment so that he could hopefully get his passport stamped in the meantime.

There is always a chance that things will get lost or stolen, it's part of the risk you take every day. This is just an opinion, but if you want to be a resident of this country, you should be respectful of this country's rules and laws. Just because they aren't always strictly enforced does not excuse breaking the law.

I did read the article. The point being he was charged on a real crime--driving a stolen vehicle--and the GC infraction was a side note. Your average Joe whose not breaking real laws won't be stopped randomly to check for his or her GC. If you're arrested for driving a stolen vehicle, no license and no insurance, you ought to have your GC status stripped and deported!

Well that's a matter for the immigration court to later decide, he may well lose his LPR status.

However you continue to ignore the main point, the fact that he was held without being able to post bail for 6 days because he didn't have his Green Card on him. If he did have it he could have posted bail and been out of jail within a day.

I know full well who Rosa Parks was.... how you can even compare what she did to not carrying your greencard is an insult to her and all the other people who have fought so hard to be trated like humans and not being forced to live like and be treated like 2 class citizens...

If you choose not to carry your greencard that up to you but here on VJ I will continue to quote the law... I personaly carry my card because it is the law and because I happen to be proud of the fact I am a LPR...
