A question for you all:

 

If Fetterman's campaign had been more open and honest about his diagnosis and current condition (apparently it is a thing that is improving which in watching my dad's own struggles would be typical) and had assessed that there is nothing wrong in his cognition or competency, other than his current auditory processing issue -- would that make anyone comfortable?

 

Politically of course the other side is going to scream about this and keep riding it for as long as possible as is typical. But I'm just asking, if ANY of your favored candidates had this issue happen to them, and there was nothing further wrong with them other than an auditory processing issue that could be solved with visually seeing speech albeit supposedly temporarily, would you have a problem with that?

 

Should persons that are blind or deaf, a stammerer, or dyslexic be prevented from office?

 

An aside, my dad has afib, has had two strokes, and I've talked about the things he has been through. He's had multiple stints of therapy and I constantly remind him how much someone is looking out for him because he is so darn lucky. He had to relearn how to walk, and do many basic tasks. Thankfully none of it (including brain surgery) affected his speech or thinking ability though he can have some memory loss. He can still do math, drive a car, and carry on quite well. I'm not saying he should run for office or anything, only that strokes do different things to different people, depending on how serious - and some are very lucky. It's unfortunate that this happened to Fetterman, but annoyingly like my dad, it seems like this guy never took his health and the consequences of it seriously. If there is genuinely nothing wrong with him other than an auditory problem that will improve over time, is this very disagreeable a thing compared to him needing a wheelchair? Or not having the use of a hand?

This says something about his level of conscientiousness and responsibility.  For one thing, if he can't or won't take care of himself, how can he be expected to take care with others?

Papa T-B. had one stroke with only physical effects, and it took him a long time to overcome them.

I've not seen any overreaction in what I've been reading; it sounds like a sober objective concern.  I honestly think that Fetterman should take the time to recover, prove that he has learned to mind his health, and present himself later as a healed human being in terms of health and self-knowledge.  Then, let him run for any office that he wants to, and may the best candidate win.

Are you equating the bold part with someone that has lost cognitive ability due to a stroke?  I don't think those are the same things.  Now if you would have compared it to someone with Downs Syndrome, or some other mental disability, that would have been more apples to apples.  I realize that people may recover somewhat or fully from the effects of a stroke, but the question with Fetterman is what is his status now, and much like your father, maybe he needs more time.

 

Now there is precedent here from the other side.  Just look at the history of the Tammy Duckworth Mark Kirk election from 2016.  Tammy Duckworth brought up his health from his stroke that he suffered in 2012 as a campaign issue.  I don't remember anyone crying foul for that.  It took Kirk a year to recover before returning to the Senate, Fetterman's stroke was just this past May, maybe he needs more time, and there is nothing wrong with asking that question of someone running for a Senate seat.

The overreaction has been on the part of the MSM and Democrat defenders trying to make Fetterman out to be someone part of a protected class.

That's the problem though. An auditory processing issue isn't considered cognitive ability. He can supposedly understand, reason, and formulate verbal responses. When he hears speech, I'm assuming pathways are damaged and there is a disconnect between what is said and what he's hearing. It may sound like gibberish. If he can read the speech then he can understand and respond accordingly. If he were deaf, he would also need captioning, sign language, or lip reading to communicate. He seems to be able to verbally respond from what we've seen. I would agree that he should be more open about this, but I don't think it would have stopped people getting upset about this.

 

I happen to know someone with Down Syndrome, and honestly? There's no reason why someone like that couldn't run for office either if they wanted. A friend of the family has Downs. He is a very smart man. He holds a job, is a Special Olympian and medal winner in numerous sports, hunts, fishes, cooks, paints, and plays music. He has more talents than any 'regular' guy I know. He is a little slow in speech response but he does respond and can certainly understand quite well.

 

All of us are just speculating at this point if Fetterman needs any more time. Don't get me wrong, I have concerns too. But I haven't seen evidence that the guy is a vegetable.
