On this page https://uk.usembassy.gov/visas/after-the-interview/ it says:

Quote

Once issued, the passport containing the visa and the immigrant visa packet containing your documents will be handed to the courier company for delivery.  On receipt of your documents, the courier company will send you a message by text/email containing a tracking number.  This number may be used to track the delivery online at https://ais.usvisa-info.com/en-gb/iv

Your documents will be returned to you in a large envelope.  DO NOT OPEN THE ENVELOPE, if you do so, you will invalidate the visa.  It should only be opened by a U.S. Immigration or Public Health Service officer.

Am I reading this right that I can't open the envelope containing my passport? I feel like I must be reading it wrong because how would you fly without showing a passport?

Or does 'passport' here not refer to my UK passport?

There is a white envelope of all your immigration documents including your medical report. It is sealed and says DO NOT OPEN. Your passport is not inside the white envelope.. The white sealed envelope and the separate loose passport are put inside a courier delivery wrapper. Mine was clear plastic. So you tear open the clear delivery wrapper and get out your passport. And you don’t mess with the sealed white envelope
