According to the CDC, the rate of firearm deaths among children under age 15 is almost 12 times higher in the United States than in 25 other industrialized countries combined. American children are 16 times more likely to be murdered with a gun, 11 times more likely to commit suicide with a gun, and nine times more likely to die in a firearm accident than children in these other countries [3].

http://www.med.umich.edu/1libr/yourchild/guns.htm

What's missing in this information is the actual number of deaths per capita. For example, in a World Health Organization study of Suicides in over 80 Countries there are at least 40 other Countries that have a higher Suicide rate than the US. Therefore, more people in the US using a firearm to commit suicide does not mean that having firearms causes people to commit suicide; it just means firearms are a more widely used method in the US.

During the time in the US where firearm ownership increased by 5x there has been a dramatic decrease in violent crimes and accidental shootings.

More Firearms = Less Violence

Here is an odd fact. More people die "falling off a ladder" and "hitting a deer with their car" (combined not in conjunction) than from accidental shootings.

I think everyone here already has their mind made up on how they think about this topic.

I keep knives, axes, chainsaws and other potentially hazards items out of my bedroom, even though I'm sure a chainsaw would be a great deterrent for anyone trying to break into my home, rape my wife and sell my kids into slavery. But to each his own...that's all I'm saying.

even that chainsaw on naked gun?

I'm curious why so many men have this fear of their wives being raped? Is it some sort of repressed erotic desire? There's a whole line of videos called, F##k My Wife, Please. If I'm going to keep a gun in my bedroom, it's because I'm afraid of my wife...

LMAO! that is so funny, you would publicly admit you know this.

thats not a jab at you. i just thought it was funny.

The intruder was probablly trying to get hold of some of that marijuana :P

Brent Whiting

The Arizona Republic

A Peoria man was arrested after what authorities described Thursday as a reckless exchange of gunfire with a man who broke into his home.

One of the rounds blasted through the wall of a house across the street, endangering four adults and three children inside the home, police said.

The shooting suspect, Luis H. Olivas Jr., 24, admitted that he fired through a bedroom window with closed curtains, said Mike Tellef, a Peoria police spokesman.

"Luis admitted that he could not see out of the house and had no idea where the rounds were going," Tellef said.

The gunfire erupted early Sunday after an intruder broke through a front window at Olivas' home in the 7100 block of West Hatcher Road, he said.

When confronted by Olivas, the intruder began firing at the homeowner, Tellef said. Olivas retrieved a weapon and returned the fire, he added.

The intruder fled and has not been caught, Tellef said.

During a search of Olivas' home, investigators seized 170 pounds of marijuana, and other contraband, Tellef added.

Olivas was arrested Sunday and booked in a Maricopa County jail on seven counts of endangerment, possession of marijuana for sale and misconduct involving weapons.

Easier to get off if you use a knife - better chance of the jury buying that you did it as a crime of passion. The gun has a distancing effect that implies premeditation.

At least according to the forensic pathology book I have at home.

I'll keep that in mind -- thanks! :P

http://www.med.umich.edu/1libr/yourchild/guns.htm

Well over half of those deaths were homicides, most of those likely gang related. Another 32% were suicides. Only about 6% appear to have been accidental (the "unintentional" category).

I think part of the problem with the gun debate is that many people get their ideas about gun safety from people who have never even seen a gun in real life, let alone fired one. If all you know about guns comes from, say, Hollywood, you'd think that guns fire by themselves, and you'd have no idea how to handle one. I remember a scene in a movie (True Lies??) where the hero drops his gun down some stairs. The gun bounces from stair to stair, firing a shot each time. This simply wouldn't happen. My friend, Will, is a background extra actor. Once he was filming a scene involving guns (fake ones, of course). The actor with the gun (supposed to be a cop, I believe) was waving the gun around with his finger on the trigger; the director didn't realize that no one with any gun training would ever handle a gun that way. Will has never handled a gun, but he did know that.

We often hear how someone "accidentally" fired their gun while "cleaning it." I've always wondered just how that happens. I'm sure that in most, if not all cases, that was simply an excuse they gave because they didn't want the cops to know what they were really doing when the gun fired.

Another problem is terms like "assault weapon" and "junk guns," which are undefined, and used more for emotional impact than for communicating actual facts. "junk guns," btw, are simply cheaper guns which poor people can afford to buy, people who are often the most at risk of being threatened with violence, and thus are in need of means of self-defence.
