Hurricane Ian update

As the Ft. Myers, Cape Coral, & Port Charlotte areas get set to be blasted by the storm, I hope that everyone affected is safe.  Our resident West coaster from Naples, @Neonred, is safe thus far.  Flooded, no electricity nor internet, but otherwise safe.

My brother and sister-in-law have a house in North Port, they are not down there, but are keeping tabs on what is going on.

Grew up in Naples, family is still there. The destruction is unprecedented. I think our family car's been totaled, hard to get information as the cell signal is so choppy. While I have friends telling me it's not all that bad in their neighborhoods, I'm seeing images from nearby mine of huge walls of water. Naples condo construction is weird; garages are partially submerged, and for aesthetic are usually nearby a lake or other body of water, so the combination isn't great. At least with my family's apartment, I'm pretty sure the water has fully enveloped the garage.

 

In my opinion, there's a whole lot of negligence on behalf of the forecasters focusing so heavily on Tampa. Charlie took a similar path iirc and the European models consistently showed this storm hitting south of Tampa. I recognize the whole state can't be mobilized for an impact, but emergency services were far too late with warning Naples. I've talked to many people who had no idea this storm even existed. I feel really bad for those who couldn't get out, especially on the islands adjacent to Ft. Myers. My understanding is that Sanibel / Captiva / Ft. Myers Beach are absolutely wrecked.

I lived in Pembroke Pines and the first year I was there 3 hurricanes battered my house.  I had some minor roof damage from one.

 

The problem with Florida is that it is so flat.  Here is the current position and you can see that it is still strong even though it is over land.  It is still sucking power from both oceans.

I live in Subic Bay and we are protected when the typical East to West typhoon comes through.  There are lots of mountains to dampen the storms.

After Hurricane Ike, my neighborhood was powerless for 6 days, one of the longest periods in the vicinity.  I self-noted with interest that the two conveniences that I missed the most were the hair-dryer (of all things!) and the cat's automatic litterbox.  In that pre-Mrs.-T-B. era, I ate chiefly from cans and packages (usually over the sink, like a Real Guy), so not much food was around to spoil during those days.

 

Thought for the Day:  From now on, failure of the electricity to go out shall be referred to as a power innage.

After the first or second storm that year, I scrambled to find a generator.  People were waiting in line at stores, for shipments to arrive.  Finally, my boss and I got lucky at a Sears store and were able to grab one each.  I used that thing many times and had 6 or 8 five gallon gas cans.  One of the storms put power out for a long distance around us, even though our utilities were underground.  No gas locally.  I drove over 100 miles before I found a gas station with gas.

 

This is Wilma in October 2005.  I suspect it is mild compared to the current storm.
