First I'm very sorry for your loss.

On to your friend. I think she just expected things to be dirt cheap and was shocked, then being stubborn she probably didn't want to pay so exaggerated things maybe.

No way would a C section in the US in any state be only 4k. Maybe if someone has awesome insurance their OOP expense might be around that.

I did not have a c-section but in Arkansas the bill sent to insurance was still over 10k. I had no drugs or medical interventions. They just had to catch the baby kind of deal. Our OOP was still about 900 for the hospital and I think it was like 1200 for the doctor fees.

I have a friend who went twice to DR to get a tommy tuck, implants and lipo. She loves the doctors there and then a year later she went back to get a butt lift.

I think if you like the doctor you should totally stay and spend some time recharging. It will be good for both of you.

Jamie, I agree with this 100% -- and even if the first doctor doesn't pan out perfectly, keep looking.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Yeah, I guess I was comparing the costs to all the ladies I know who recently had c-sections. Two of them have the exact same insurance as me and their out of pocket costs came out to $4000. One of my closest girlfriends who had a c-section has Kaiser and her out of pocket cost came out a little over $4000 as well. But I agree this friend is very much so dramatic...

Oh yes OOP I can see 4k, the bill the insurance company get would be much more. It's all really nuts. I have a few dramatic friends they are a blast at times though :)

Enjoy your stay and I wish you the best in finding a doctor you can trust there. Recharge and relax a bit with one less worry about doctors would be nice.

My husband and I have specifically traveled to the DR for medical care several times. It's faster, same quality (with a little research, and esp in a private clinic) and SOOO much less expensive. We're going again this summer.

The doctors are a LOT less easier to work with than US doctors and insurance, Imho. Plus, depending on how much it is you might get your own insurance there.

Yes indeed. My mistake!

I won't squeal on you. :P

Actually, we used to have neighbors from the DR, and the wife went back there specifically for cosmetic surgery.  That's a meaningful endorsement.

  • 1 month later...

I just want to express sincere condolences for your loss and I am deeply so inspired at your strength. I wish you and your partner nothing but the best in life and I am sending positive energy your way.

You are not alone, don't give up, it's only paperwork, at the end of the day, you have love and THAT doesn't need to be "approved" to be real. Much love. 🙏 :)

A few months ago I filed an expedite request for my fiancés visa because I was pregnant with our first child and had an extensive history with depression, anxiety, debilitating panic attacks and suicide ideation. I had gotten to a good place prior to meeting my fiancé, but when I became pregnant, my depression and anxiety had came back. I contacted USCIS to file an expedite request, which was denied! I decided to get a lawyer to assist with the latter half of this process because I just no longer wanted to deal with the process on our own. Well last month, at 20weeks and 4 days, I unfortunately, lost our child which has caused my symptoms to worsen like nothing I’ve ever seen before. I decided to come visit my fiancé in the DR so I could have time to emotionally heal together and also spend time together since we haven’t seen each other for over 4 months. This morning I decided to check the website to check processing times for K1, and what do you know? The processing times has now increased to 14 months! I am spiraling! I don’t want to go back to LA because I am worried about my mental state, but I also need to go see my doctors so I can follow up on the loss of my baby. At this point, I want to  withdraw our K1 visa and opt in for the spousal visa, but I don’t want to start this whole process over! I am also annoyed with the money that has already been invested into our current application as well. We have a call with our lawyer about this, but wanted to get some feedback from people who are in the same boat as me. What are y’all’s thoughts?!

Dont withdraw and start over. You have no control where spousal visa goes. Mine is in texas and estimated wait time is almost a year. I know it's tough but youve already waited a while. Best is to keep waiting with the path youve chosen. Im sorry for your loss.
