Hey everyone,

i have a question regarding a soon to be expired passport. When we filed for the I-130 the passport was still valid, but since the process of the i-130 is taking longer than usual the passport will expire on November. Do you guys think we should renew the passport or wait till it get to the NVC and let them know that the copy provided to the uscis will no longer be valid? What’s the best thing to do? We aren’t there yet but I just want to be prepared for anything.

thanks!

Get the new passport for the NVC process .. the new document number etc will be used on the DS260 forms. This is not an issue. You do not need to do anything about the old one. Remember.. beneficiaries of other family visa categories can be waiting 10-20 years after they submit the I130 before their PD is current and a visa available. Imagine how many passport renewals they go through while waiting !

Yeah, I would say it's best to apply for a renewed passport so that you expect to have it in hand by the time the petition is approved.
