Me thinksssss you have to file with Canada Revenue for one year... and then some sort of treaty applies. But I shall not confuse you... like Lynette says, there is ziggy around somewhere, he is the tax-man!!!!

As for US citizenship, you cannot even apply for it in less than 3 years I think, and yup, Canada allows you to hold dual citizenship.

Good luck, L.

p.s. What is EI anyways?????

hmmm... must locate Ziggy....

And EI is Employment Insurance I think. There is a lot of info on it, but I can't seem to make sense of what I find. From what I gather, you can apply for EI, but I don't know through who... Canada, US... it's all above me.

zyggy will respond, he always does our guardian angel.

As per EI, I have no darn clue. I wish I could claim all the money they took back (since it turned out that when my husband needed it he "wasn't eligible because he was a foreign student ) but that's another story ;)

EI is employment insurance through Canada.

http://www.hrsdc.gc.ca/en/ei/menu/eihome.shtml

If you are relocating due to marriage, you are eligible to receive employment insurance after you move to the U.S. K1s and CR-1/IR-1 visa holders are eligible. K3s are only eligible if they have an EAD. Canada requires that you are willing & able to work while you claim your benefits. K3s are not employment authorised so they are not "able" to work while in the U.S. until their EAD.

i haven't physically seen my ROE (my sister is supposed to have mailed it to me the other day), but she said that it indicated the reason for me quitting was due to moving. is this sufficient? or does it have to say due to marriage?

First contact: Oct 14/06

First meeting: Nov 6-13/06

Engaged: Dec 29/06

Moved to US: June 28/07

Married: July 14/07

I think it has to state that you are relocating due to marriage or you will not be eligible to receive EI.

Here's the part about relocation for a spouse (fiance's count) but your ROE should say something like "relocation due to marriage". Marriage and relocation (or moving) are the key words here. I believe some K1s have requested their ROE to say "relocation due to intended marriage" or something like that.

http://www.hrsdc.gc.ca/en/ei/digest/6_3_3.shtml#6_3_3

Just "moving" is not "just cause" to quit your job and be eligible for EI. I'm not sure how picky the out of claims office is but you're going to need to provide photocopies of your K1 and I-94 so they'll know that you did move for marriage.

You might want to call the claims office about this though to clarify if your ROE is going to be a problem.

We had just that kind of list on the old VJ forums (the precursor to the current Canadian Clearing House thread), but now there's no access to it. Which makes me sad, since we put a lot of time and effort into creating it. I wish I had made a copy of all the links while I could have :(
