I sent in my I-129F petition and just had the check cashed. I'm trying to find the case number on the back, but parts of the check are poorly stamped and unreadable. There are some numbers that I can read, but none are 13 digits long, which I believe is the length of a case number. Can I just call USCIS to get my case number? I wanted to ask first before navigating their phone maze.

You can, but they may tell you to wait for NOA1 first. If for some reason its not delivered, then they will be able to get you your case number.

Don't worry about the recipt number on the check, it is (usually) not the number they assign to your case. Wait for your NO1, the number will be on there, very reader friendly and thn you can start tracking!

They cashed my check a month ago and I have still not received anything in the mail, so I called to check the status. I couldn't read the number very well on the back of my check, so I told the gentleman what I thought it might be and he said that it was correct. If not, he would've transferred me to someone who could get me the correct number. He was very helpful and I wasn't waiting on the phone for very long. Good luck! :)

we never got our noa1 and we sent a money order so the only way to get our case # is to call USCIS. they asked if it has been 15days since we sent the package. when we said yes, our call was right away transferred to a supervisor. he asked my fiancee a couple of questions and then gave us our case#. :-)
