has anyone stayed that the Hotel Abri du Voyageur? I understand it's in a fairly seedy neighborhood but don't really care about that. For $60 a night in Montreal I expect there to be some drawbacks. What I'm worried about is cleanliness and noise.

thanks

9, Ste-Catherine West

the few reviews that I've found of it are completely bi-polar half of the people said it was the worst ever and half said they loved it. I think there is a sex shop next door and I'm assuming from the very little that I saw of Ste Catherine's when I was in Montreal before that there will be lots of bars and clubs.

I really wanted to stay on the Plateau but the cheapest b&b that I've found is $100 a night. for $40 less a night we could stay on Ste Catherine's and just walk over to the Plateau during the day

I stayed at a nice hotel on St-Denis a few times, not too expensive, but Im not sure how far that is from the Consulate, I'll check it out when I get home from work and let you know

We stayed on a seedy street off St. Catherine's about 4-6 blocks from the Consulate. It was down near the sex shoppes.. but that could be any street in Montreal! ;) We had no problems with our place, the sheets were clean.. and they had done some recent renovations.. so we just ignored the few "not finished yet" features of hte room.

One thing i would suggest (as an asthmatic) is that if one of you cannot stand smoke that you INSIST on a non-smoking room. the first room we had was REEEEEEKING of smoke (i forgot that there are still hotel/motels that have smoking allowed). We had to change 2 times to get a room that wasn't bad smelling.

do you remember the name(s) of the places? The one other time I was in Montreal for a conference but didn't have much money so my lab mate and I had to stay in a hostel on the Plateau. it was gross-our room was clean enough, complete with plastic covered mattresses, but I don't think the bathroom that we shared with 10 people was cleaned more than once the whole week.

so I'm looking for cheap but not nasty hostel cheap

Try La Tour Centreville on Rene' Lesveque Blvd. I stayed there many times while in Montreal and did so for my interview in June It was $110 a nite, clean and comfy They have a locked locker to hold your stuff in while you go for the interview and it's only a 1 minute walk from the Consulate.

The St-Denis Hotel is situated at 1254 Rue St Denis, in Montreal, about 1 mile from the Consulate.

If you don't smoke, you could look up hotels on www.hotwire.com to get some great deals. I mention the smoking because you can't specify and you only know the hotel name and exact location after you book it. It does tell you the star rating though and area.
