If he obtained an international driver's license before he leaves, majority of the states in the US accept it as a valid driver's license.

However, you need to ask you auto insurance, if he will be a covered driver.  When I arrived, I was told by insurance company, I would not be covered and anything that happened while I drove would not be covered by insurance.

I will definitely check with them, thanks so much!

An "international driver's license" is nothing more than a translation of his foreign license.  The point regarding insurance is significant.

Thank you so much! I think that is for the majority of the states but we will be driving through several of them. I should double-check those. Appreciate this!!

The rules are for the state of residence.  If you are just travelling through, just a valid domestic or foreign driver's license is required.

I think there's some confusion here.

It seems the OP and spouse wants to drive across several states to move to their preferred state of residence after the OP's spouse arrives in the US.

The 30 day requirement (or 60 days or whatnot) are for foreign drivers who intend or establishes residence in a state.  It is fine to drive across various US states with a foreign driver's license before establishing residency - the multitude of tourists do it all the time.  The only hurdle is if the license does not have dual language with English.  For example, my wife's Ukrainian license is also in English.  If the license is completely in a foreign language, an international license may be required, which basically converts the information on the license to English, among other foreign languages.

Agree about the insurance.   I was posting about some confusion of needing a US state DL when moving from POE arrival state to destination residence state.

her address is in CT so he can only drive on international for 30 days

Can I Use My Foreign License or an International Driving Permit? International individuals who will be in US for more than 30 days are considered US residents for driving purposes and must apply for a CT driver's license within 30 days of arrival in the state.

Hello! This might have been asked before - but just wanted to confirm! Is he able to drive here when he arrives in the US? Thank you! :)

My husband did for 2 months until he received his NY drivers license . Because it was during Covid time, his appointment to take the test was 6 week away.

Then u need to check the requirements of all the states he drives in

Each state has its own rules for DL

Example :  we bought a new car in GA and legal to drive the 1st 30 days with no plate

but we drove it to NC to show our son and guess what "not legal there" and they don't follow Ga laws

Anyway,  if your insurance allows you to add him on the policy,  then ok

if you can't add him with a foreign DL ,  i wouldn't take the chance

I called my insurance company and they said it was fine. Good call on this thank you so so much!!
