Several Vjers work in the prison system. I think their take on this issue would be rather more interesting than a hypothetical "statistical" analysis.

You love beating around the bush.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

So you call me racist on my opinions but totally ignore the direct recorded comments of others.

I merely find it bizarre that you keep dealing in stereotypes and don't seem to see how it could be offensive.

What a world hey. So basically it is okay, and the norm, for someone black to propose the "death of the white man" yet stereotypical racism for someone Caucasian to identify and point out these direct comments.

I show facts and stats I am racist. I quote comments from others; once again 'I' am racist.

"Facts and Stats" is a bit of an exaggeration IMO.

You love convenient answers.

No there are more poor Caucasian Americans. There are not many poor African Americans. There are lots of poor Black Americans but not African Americans.

This is probably falling on deaf ears but you should be aware of one of the reasons why the term "African American" came about, and why it is in use. Because the African Americans were brought over here as slaves, they have lost their link to the past and their ancestory. While most caucasions and some ethnic Americans can state, unequivocably, that they are descendants of specific genealogical lines, "African Americans" cannot. That information is lost to them. All they know is that they were more than likely brought here from the continent of Africa. That is why that term is so important and that is why research and education is an important factor prior to engaging in a debate. When you are ignorant about your facts you are likely to be called on it.

Its been mentioned that there is noone alive who was a direct victim of slavery, but many blacks carried their master's surnames. Lot of people changed their names in the 60's and 70's...

I understand the reasoning behind it but the does not make it correct. Is someone like Charlize Theron, who actually was born in South Africa, viewed the same as a black African American? Will her kids be able to apply for college under affirmative action? Or is that only for non-white African Americans. Most Caucasians call themselves Americans. I have never heard anyone who is not a citizen or ever stepped foot in another country claim they are from there..

PS Please enlighten me with the research you are referring too.

Leaving aside the nationality issue - who would be viewing her the same?

Leaving aside the nationality issue - who would be viewing her the same?

Unless you are a citizen of another nation you cannot claim to be from there period.

Now if someone said I am 'American' of 'African' decent, that is correct. I am actually hearing a lot of people say that lately. That is they are American and not African American. All of my black American friends say so themselves.

So you don't like the terminology. So what?

Most Americans say "*nationality-American" (Irish-American, Italian-American, Asian-American). African American is no different.

You are referring to slang more than technicality.

Are they citizens of those nations? Can they choose to simply travel and live there? If the answer is no then they cannot claim they are half this or that but can say I am of XYZ decent.

People say it all the time - someone just called themselves an Italian-American on another thread. Pretty sure she is not a citizen of Italy.

Why do you care? It's like getting bothered because prefers to be called by their middle name.
