Unfortunately, the philosophical argument for the right to die can also end up colliding with troubling decisions in a country where the government funds and controls access to healthcare. That is reportedly happening in Canada, where some citizens say health officials are actively encouraging people with disabilities and other chronic medical issues to consider suicide.

 

According to the Associated Press, hospitals are raising the possibility of assisted suicide with patients who hadn't asked about it. These conversations are not motivated by quality of life but health care costs.

 

The A.P. notes that Belgium and the Australian state of Victoria, which allow physician-assisted suicide, tell medical professionals not to bring up euthanasia so that it's not seen as medical advice. In other words, make sure it's the patient's idea.

 

This is not the case in Canada, where health care workers are trained to inform patients that they can choose euthanasia if they have a qualifying condition. This has led to some patients, particularly those with disabilities but not necessarily fatal illnesses, having some unpleasant conversations. One provided a recording to the Associated Press:

IME, this  has been going on well before euthanasia was legalized. Before the euthanasia age, if you brought your spouse or parent into the ER for a relatively routine thing you would be pressured to sign a DNR.  
 

Then after your loved one went into hospice for a terminal illness they would ration the morphine and prolong the suffering. 
 

Those nurses were monsters. I hate them. 
 

The euthanasia era is the lesser of two evils given the reality of rationed care.

Don't disagree.  In my parents case, both of them were essentially on life support when the decision was made to remove that.  The one thing I see different here, is there seems to be a little more promotion of this for folks in Canada that aren't on life support or dealing with a terminal illness solely for financial reasons.

Canada is planning to limit use of fertilizers. Given Canada’s position as a major exporter of food the obvious  goal is to trigger famines.  While most of the Castreau famine and subsequent deaths will be outside Canada in developing countries,  this will escalate food prices inside Canada, and I predict an increase in domestic deaths due to malnutrition 

 

All of which, Castreau will blame on global warming and thus the GOP and billionaires. 
 

The real goal is to convert wheat fields to fields covered in solar panels, and shut down the petroleum industry.  I mean if you can grow tomatoes in a hot house in the winter, you can generate enough solar energy for the country in the winter when it is -40 degrees if Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba are covered in solar panels, amiright?

 

I wish Canada had more Sri Lankans.  They get demonstrably upset when you take away their fertilizer

We had to make an emergency run up to Canada in Nov. The price of food was ridiculous. $28lb for chicken breast. Almost $10 for hotdogs.  Now the cricket plant, brain washing kids and already sending cricket made products for the teachers to feed to the kids. I'm not surprised the health care is going down the tubes too. They need to weed out ppl who won't follow their sick plans.
