Did a quick search on this topic (here in the UK section only; doesn't seem like information like this would be relevant elsewhere), and didn't find anything... just thought I'd start a thread where we could compare phone cards or plans for calling our SOs in the US while we wait for our lives together to start!

For almost three years I have used a card through a company called Nomi Phone - www.nomi-phone.com - whose rates to the US are 1.64p per minute, landlines AND mobiles... same rate to Aus, which is great for me but perhaps of limited use to others! There's no charge to set up an account, and then you just top up as you go; you can set up auto-top-up online, or just add credit as you wish. I find the service great - excellent lines, instant connection, etc. And no, I don't get commission from them; just thought it was worth a recommendation after so long!

If anyone else has a great deal they'd like to share, please go ahead...

The Very Secret Diary of Legolas Son of Weenus - by Cassandra Claire

Day One: Went to Council of Elrond. Was prettiest person there. Agreed to follow some tiny little man to Mordor to throw ring into volcano. Very important mission - gold ring so tacky.

Day Six: Far too dark in Mines of Moria to brush hair properly. Am very afraid I am developing a tangle.

Orcs so silly.

Still the prettiest.

Day 35: Boromir dead. Very messy death, most unnecessary. Did get kissed by Aragorn as he expired. Does a guy have to get shot full of arrows around here to get any action? Boromir definitely not prettier than me. Cannot understand it. Am feeling a pout coming on.

Frodo off to Mordor with Sam. Tiny little men caring about each other, rather cute really.

Am quite sure Gimli fancies me. So unfair. He is waist height, so can see advantages there, but chunky braids and big helmet most off-putting. Foresee dark times ahead, very dark times.

I think I might look into that. We get 2p a minute with 18866, but there's a small connection fee each time. Free national calls though.

I use planet numbers (www.planet-numbers.co.uk) and there are a bunch of services like this - you just call their number first then dial the number you want, so i've just got it on speed dial on my phone.

As i've got a load of free minutes on my mobile each month I phone from that and i never seem to get charged any extra even though i'm usually on for an hour.

Neal uses 1899 (http://www.call1899.co.uk), which charges a 4p connection fee, then it is 1p per minute. His monthly bill is always low, even though we talk every day. And the other great part is that all his statements are online (with dialed numbers), so he can easily print them out and bring tham as evidence to the interview!

For calling from my mobile to any US number, I use TopUpToTalk, and it's 2p a minute plus whatever your standard local call rate is from a mobile to 0207 numbers is. For those of you with inclusive minutes to landlines in the UK, it is quite cheap if you're on the move (for me, never know when you're in a mini-cab and wanting to call your mom to make sure the driver knows you're connected to someone else when it is 1am London time! God, sound like a p!sshead here...).

I just use skype really, when using calling cards from my mobile it always seems to charge me connection fees! Whereas skype to US cell and home phones is like a penny a minute or something low like that, so credit seems to last forever!

I did use my mobile phone the first month we were together and i was over here though (foolishly not thinking about the huge costs of calling usa on it!!) and the bill was over £200 as opposed to £20ish normally...lesson learnt!

I use the post office phone cards to phone America from the UK... For £10 you get nearly 5 hours worth of talk time, and 4 Sundays and 1 Saturday a year you get unlimited talk time between 12am & 12pm :D They are fantastic. The line is very good too. I have tried other phone cards and the connection is rubbish but I have never had any problems with these. They also have a free access number, no maintenance fees AND no connection fees. (Make sure you call from a landline though... A payphone will charge you 20p a minute and a mobile will eat it up pretty quick too)

Also if you buy them from here: http://www.1st4phonecards.com/PostOffice/phonecards.htm You get points each time. Eventually, you will earn yourself a free one :D I have earnt 2 free ones so far! LOL

My fiance can't seem to find a decent phone card in the States to call me... He uses a Sprint one but it only gives him a couple of hours talk time. So.. He just starting using 10-10-9-8-7... If you dial that number before calling a UK number it gives you all calls for 2.5 cents a minute (Plus a 20 cents connection charge) You would have to check out their website to see what the charges for other countries are though.
