Question regarding EBT Benefits.

Hey guys, so long story short - we missed biometrics and are being made to wait for a second appointment. The problem is we had scheduled a flight for a medical procedure my husband needed to have overseas. We now have delayed the flight but are struggling a bit financially as I had to quit my job in order to go overseas to care for him after surgery.

While we get back on our feet, I wanted to ask if I (or him - the applicant) would be eligible for any EBT benefits and such, as this was recommended to me by a friend. But as I am his petitioner and have signed the affidavit for him, I'm not sure if this is even possible at all. Does anyone know if the affidavit I signed makes me ineligible for these benefits? (I am almost certain he doesn't qualify - but just in case if anyone knows an exact answer please do clarify that as well).

Thanks for always being so helpful :)

Also, sorry if this is the incorrect category, I wasn't sure where to post and this is the application we are currently waiting for.

Please fill out your timeline as required so it can be determined if this is the correct forum.

You have not indicated what application you are currently waiting for and your timeline will tell us that so we can answer.

He is not eligile for federal mean-tested benefits, however, you are eligible. Signing of an Affidavit of Support only covers initial 5 years of LPR. One of the conditions of SNAP is that applicant must have been an LPR for five years. Exceptions apply in case an applicant falls within a federally protected class.

Read Section 403, subsention b and c.

What do you means by EBT? EBT is just a card, it is like a debit card, what mean-tested benefit are you seeking?

I guess it’s called SNAP? I’m not very certain and still learning my bad for not being clear.

I was told that because I signed the affidavit this could be conflicted.

It's there a reason your husband is going oversea for surgery? make sure he's not claiming to be a resident elsewhere...

You might be eligible to receive assistance, see eligibility here:

https://www.fns.usda.gov/snap/recipient/eligibility

Quote

SNAP eligibility has never been extended to undocumented non-citizens. Specific requirements for non-citizens who may be eligible have changed substantially over the years and become more complicated in certain areas. The Food and Nutrition Act of 2008 limits eligibility for SNAP benefits to U.S. citizens and certain lawfully present non-citizens.

Generally, to qualify for SNAP, non-citizens must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Have lived in the United States for at least 5 years.
  • Be receiving disability-related assistance or benefits.
  • Be children under 18.

Additionally, these individuals must also satisfy other SNAP eligibility requirements such as income and resource limits in order to qualify for benefits.

If certain members of a household are ineligible for SNAP, state agencies must still determine eligibility for SNAP for any remaining household members who are seeking assistance.

FYI: EBT is food stamps, which is under the government benefits that provide the 'public benefits where it fits'. It's not like a debit card for sure. I used to have one but I am no longer allowed to have it due to history reason of mine (I'll skip out explaining here.)
