I just got my interview letter for October 13th. Thinking that it wouldn't be until next year sometime I sent my Canadian passport away for renewal. It's now stuck in the passport backlog. I can't imagine it will be here by then. Can I go without it? Should I reschedule? Has this happened to anyone else? I feel so dumb.

They do like to see passports at the interview, personally I had to show 2 of my 3 passports at my interview (the one with my K-1 visa and the one I had used to enter the US at later dates as a greencard holder).

However, a lot of people do actually lose their passports or have them stolen. Many people don't even get to keep their old passport when they renew and get their new passport. So I can't imagine not having a passport would be a hindrance from getting a US citizenship.

What was your priority date ? Or timeline ?

I'm not sure what you're asking. I filed N-400 April 25, 2022. Interview set for October 13, 2022. Mailed my passport renewal 3 weeks ago. Wait time is up to 6 months right now to get it back.

I'll give that a try. It's darn near impossible to get someone on the phone there.

I called USCIS and the woman flat out said that she didn't know what I should do or what the rules were. The interview letter says please keep the appointment even if you do not have all the items indicated above. So I guess I'll go and see what happens.

I would recommend providing proof that you are renewing it , when I did my passport renewal I believe they provided me a confirmation # for it in email and if can’t just explain to the USCIS officer

The letter is asking for the passport, but at the interview, they don’t ask to see any document. If it’s making you feel any better, bring the copies that you sent with your N-400 forms.
He did not ask my husband for it either!!

It's different from case to case and IO to IO, so you can't say for sure if they will ask for the passports or not.

I brought all my 3 passports, she asked to see 2 of them and my DL and greencard before the interview started.

Keep your appointment.
The passport is NOT a requirement for eligibility and you will be perfectly fine. They list it on the interview letter and may even ask for it is NOT an issue  nor are you required or delayed for not having it.

(many lose passports, old expired passports are retained by issuing countries, dog ate the passport…all are granted)
