Thank you. It was a long shot in sending the insurance card and VA dependent application, because I could not find the actually letter showing he’s been added, until a few days later while cleaning out a closet. The lady who was working on his passport application was a fellow veteran and she understood.

Congrats.

1. Did you also apply for a passport card?

2. Please file N-600 too.  Now is a good time given your original evidence is fresh and available (at least once the passport agency returns it).

Thank you.

Only applied for the passport book. For what reason for the N-600 if he has the passport. From what I read on here from others, it’s not necessary only if you want for your records. Maybe I understood wrong. The passport is proof enough. once I receive the passport, I will schedule an appointment with Social Security to update his file. With the passport, his file will be updated from legal resident to citizen. That is what I was told the last time I was in SS office

An additional $35 would have produced a second proof of U.S. Citizenship, which is useful when one is required to mail such original proof (such as applying for a new passport when original has been lost, or when SSA wants the evidence mailed because of pandemic fear). Now it is $65. But still well worth it.

Situations  I’ve observed where a U.S. passport or passport card just aren’t good enough:

* registering to vote online (Tennessee is notorious)

* getting a drivers license when the dmv cannot verify status with SAVE

* some DMVs don’t seem to accept passport or passport card. Try going down the Arkansas motor vehicles rabbit hole

* getting a security clearance

* certain roles in the federal civil service

* certain roles in the military, especially those roles that exclude people who were born citizens of certain countries - the certificate of citizenship identifies the country of birth

The Patriot Act has increasingly  placed children who acquired citizenship after birth and before age 18 in less tenable situations.

At the very least the transition from a child passport to and adult passport at ages 16 and 17 requires some finesse and hopefully you will be there to provide your child the required assistance.  At age 18 it becomes harder.

I hear ya. It’s always good to have a backup. I did not think of the passport card. As for the N-600, I thought hard about it but ready many suggested it wasn’t worth it. As my adopted son is 5. Here in Arkansas, the passport and even his certificate of foreign birth will let him get a drivers license, register to vote and more. Yeah I know how they are. My mom retired from working for the state. As for military, he will still be able to join, can get a security clearance of confidential, secret with a little more investigation (I used to do this while in). I understand some ramifications. Will cross them later. I will speak with the wife again and determine should we get the N-600.

thanks for the advice

Here in Arkansas, the passport

I’ve been down that rabbit hole with the dfa website and don’t agree

https://www.dfa.arkansas.gov/driver-services/license-id-and-permits/

It doesn’t offer a non real ID drivers license. Maybe Arkansas has one but I don’t see it online.

So click the real id link:

https://appengine.egov.com/apps/ar/DFA/RealID

From there click on the quiz link

It asks where you were born. When you select inside the USA, a passport / passport card is acceptable.

When you select outside the USA, a passport / passport card disappears as an option.

A: PROOF OF LEGAL PRESENCE

arrow_drop_down Document Requirements
Select a Lawful Identity and Age document you have:

Foreign Passport

Certificate of Birth Abroad

Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services issued forms

None of the above

I will double and triple check. I understand about the rabbit hole. As for the real ID, I don't plan to get, passport is good enough. I've been down that road as an Arkansan. I will look into probably getting, just to not deal with the BS. I appreciate it very much

Just received an email from the post office that the passport has been delivered..YAY
