Can I use a friend's address as my residence/mailing address for a few months while I'm outside the US?

I've submitted my N400 a few weeks ago. I plan to go outside of the US for a few months. I'd prefer to stop paying my rent during these few months and instead use a friend's address on my AR-11 and USCIS online profile as my mailing address. Is that ok?

Background: I am aware I have to continue to satisfy the physical presence and continuous residence requirements until I get my US passport, so I'll make sure to come back to the US within 180 days, and over the past 5 years I've been outside the US for approximately 1.5 years (so I'm nowhere near the 912 day limit for the physical presence, and I've made sure that all my stays outside the US are fewer than 180 days and never back-to-back). I applied to the US passport on the basis that I received my green card 5 years ago.

Yes you can.

However, I'm not sure how you applied for US PP yet you haven't even got N400 (your last sentence). It should and has always been N400 then PP, unless you're a minor, which doesn't apply to your situation.

Immigration journey is not: fast, for the faint at heart, easy, cheap, for the impatient nor right away. If more than 50% of this applies to you, best get off the bus.

You can use any address you want. It doesn't need to be a paid address.

thanks, is there any risk that the USCIS officer may ask for a lease, or some other proof, during the naturalization interview?

No, they usually ask for ID with the current address.

Thanks, my ID address is the place I intend to stop renting, as I would prefer not to pay the rent while I am away. What happens during the interview if my friend's address (which I plan to use on my AR-11 and USCIS online profile) is different from my ID address?

Then you don't have a PP...so, the last line of your original post is invalid and confusing.

Anyway, carry on. No issues

Oh I see what you mean, thanks you're right, I should have written "I applied to the N-400 on the basis that I received my green card 5 years ago."

Great!  Is there any risk that the USCIS officer may ask for a lease, or some other proof, during the naturalization interview?

Nope. You're filing under 5 year category. They don't care whether you live on a tree or mansion.

Hmm, I wonder what that address would be.  123 Elm, corner of Park and Meadow?

Go ahead and also do a change of address at the post office, DMV , your bank..etc and you will be fine .
US post office has something called  Informed Delivery , so you get instant notice on your phone ( including picture of incoming mail).
You are allowed to couch surf, roam free and your plan to designate a permanent address is perfect.

Thanks, good point, I'll make sure that the new location is assigned to the same USCIS field office.
