A rather silly question. As these backlogs are massive is it possible for me the petitioner in the k1 visa process to apply for work and travel and work in my beneficiary/ fiancé's country while waiting for our k1 to process. I'm US and she is Thai

As long as you are able to demonstrate that your absence from the US is temporary, and that you maintain domicile in the US , yes you can live overseas during the waiting  time   The challenge will be demonstrating /meeting the I134 requirements if you have no US based income at the time of the interview

I see. Thank you. So basically if my income is US based I am solid!

Yes for the I-134, you will need to include your latest IRS tax return, US employment verification letter and 3-months of payslips to show financial support in the US.

If you do spend some of the wait time outside of the US and work, filing for the US income tax, includes some extra paperwork to keep track of since foreign employers may not provide W-2s, but still possible to do with employment payslips, bank statements from foreign and US banks, and transfers to US banks. IRS publishes a foreign exchange rate for calculating income tax to US dollars on your return. To claim foreign exclusion with the IRS, there is a 330-day presence overseas rule, otherwise your income may be subject to double taxation with the foreign country and US. Plus, if your foreign assets is over 10K, you will need to file for the FinCen Fbar with the Treasury department.

I have heard of stories of petitioners working remotely in foreign country for a US company with W-2 while waiting for the K1, where their pay was directly deposited to the US bank. But I'm not sure if their tax filing is any less paperwork?

So for the I-134, Part 8, if you do have foreign income, you may need to do more explaining of your Tax filing and why your income may seem unstable moving back to the US. But working a period overseas while waiting for the K1 is possible to do. Good luck!

Any income world wide you will file taxes. If you enter on Thailand on a tourist visa I would think you are not allowed to work,  you will have to do side jobs that pay cash directly to you.

You can treat this like you being a Self - Employed in the USA.
