Getting MO driver's licence (from UK)

So, I'm getting confused trying to work out what to do here. Some sources say I just need to take the written test while others say I need to take the full driving test.

Do any British expats in MO know the process here? I really don't want to have to take another full test again.

Written, vision , driving…… 🤪
MO does not have reciprocity for overseas licences, only other US states

You’re going to have to do the test again.

With respect to the practical test, you have nothing to worry about: US tests are very straightforward compared to the UK test.

I don't see how you can avoid the driving part of the test.

Drive 7 hours with driving instructor...

I was surprised too. My wife did the written exam for the learners permit. After that she could go 2 ways:

1. Take the driving exam at the local DMV

2. Take Driver Education class online exam and enroll with local driving school, to have 7 hours of driving with them.

After 7 hours of driving around, they've issued a certificate that she can drive. With that we went to DMV website, uploaded the certificate, and about 1 week later her DL arrived in mail.

However, No.2 cost here in Virginia about $350. We went with No.2 so the instructor would give her pointers which maybe I've missed while teaching her. Nope. It turned out to be just drive for 7 hours, no driving instructions whatsoever.

And No.1 is free, up to 3 times a month :)

I couldn’t find any reference to this in a quick look through the Missouri literature.

I was thinking in my head ‘I wish they had that up here in Wisconsin’, but then it occurred to me the actual theory and practical tests took less than 25 minutes combined 😅

Neither test here in Missouri is difficult. It is just an inconvenience. There are two separate offices that you have to go to. No unified DMV office in Missouri. I grew up in Illinois where you could go take your written, driving test and get your license all in one place. In Missouri there are private license agencies. The State Police gives the exams.

the state of Missouri does not do this.  You will need to take the written, vision and driving part of the test.  If you  had an eye exam within 90 days of taking the test your eye doctor can fill out the vision portion but that is the only part.  You will have to take the written and driving and identify the road signs on the vision part.

MO does not have to do this.  If you are over 18, you can take your driving test right after you take the written test.

There’s a 7 day mandatory wait between written and practical here. Not a massive hurdle to jump tbh.

I had to do the full test again in Virginia - I was dreading it despite being an experienced driver because I'm pretty sure I wouldn't pass the UK test again first time - you know how strict that is with all the little test you have to do. The US test was so different. We just took one turn around the block and back to the center. Didn't even have to do any cones or parking etc. Might be different for you but I bet it will still be a lot easier than you are expecting.
