Just curious how those of you with SO's that smoke, when you have a non-smoking house, coped with the transition.

My daughter was talking to her stepdad over the webcam tonight and he totally lit up in front of her. He had told her that he would quit before he gets here so she was shocked to see this and she totally started bawling her eyes out and walked out on their conversation.

She's 11 btw and just had an intensive DARE program in her school which scared the pants off of the kids re: smoking, drinking, drugs, etc.

I tried talking to her and telling her that it's not easy to quit (I used to be a smoker) and that although maybe he won't be 100% quit yet when he gets here, since it's a stressful thing to move from one country to another, he absolutely won't EVER smoke in the house.

Well she wanted no part of that conversation and is convinced all her clothes will reek of smoke if I wash his with hers.:wacko:

Anyone ever go through this? It is a nasty habit but for some reason I never really smelt it on him when I was with him and his mouth didn't have that ashtray taste. Don't know why exactly 'cause normally it bothers the heck out of me.

I'm wondering if he'll be more motivated once he sees how taboo it is to smoke in the US. I mean they smoke everywhere in Egypt so it's really no biggie.

Khallid goes outside to smoke. I thought for sure he'd stop when it was below zero last winter. Nope....it didn't work.

How did your daughter deal?

Yeah when I smoked it didn't matter if it was below zero. Actually it was cool watching the smoke just float in the air. lol.

Oh....I have to add how Khallid had to go out and buy darn near every brand of cigarettes when he got here. Someone would tell him "oh these are the best" and he'd get them! He said we have more cigarettes here than they do in Egypt

Did he used to smoke Cleopatras? I told my husband to pack two things when he comes here. Underwear and cigarettes. rofl. The underwear there is soooo awesomely soft and of course the butts are waaay cheaper.

Maybe that's why the cig smell wasn't too bad on your husband. The Cleopatra cigs are not very strong. Lighter than a Marlboro Light I would say. That might make it easier for him to quit in the future. If the price doesn't make him sh!t his pants first. heheee

Yep! And the L&M. He also didn't understand the no smoking ordinance here. No smoking pratically anywhere!

We both smoke, so not really an issue (yet). We are also young, and realize that we need to at some point. Mostly, we smoke outside. We have moments of weakness as well (rain), so we have been known to smoke inside.

Bad habit, but I love cigarettes so much!

Waleed used to smoke and I told him I couldn't marry a smoker so he quit. Then he told me he couldn't marry someone who drank and had me quit. Then when I was in Hurghada with him on our honeymoon I caught him smoking. He was so ashamed.

I think it's a cultural thing like you suggested. I suggested moderation for both parties but he won't have it. It's black and white all our nothing with him. So...as far as the daughter is concerned we don't have kids as of yet but I used to work in childcare. We didn't address the issues of smoking with them but I know as we age we will adjust and get over it.

I hope though that he does quit and is more concious of his habits for her sake.

my fiance smokes..but has tapered down as time has gone by since we've met. the one thing i was very firm on requesting from him is that he must quit by the time he arrived in the us.

last time i saw him he was down to about 5-6 a day.

so hopefully in three days he'll be down to ZERO!!!! :diablo:

I'm a smoker, and have been for many years. I came from Canada, where there is almost no place to smoke anymore except in your own home, or outside. There are no public buildings that allow any smoking, and even if you do smoke outside, you are either corralled into some type of fenced off area, or you must be so many metres from a doorway etc. The government, with the assistance of non-smoking groups, has regulated all smoking. There is no advertising of cigarettes, you can't see them in the stores (they are hidden behind curtains or under counters)! Anyway...I thought I'd quit once I came to the US. Gene doesn't smoke. We've talked about my smoking, initiated by me, and he would like me to quit, for health reasons, but definitely thinks it's my decision as to when and where. I smoke outside at home, never in a vehicle, and we always go to non-smoking sections in restaurants, and get non-smoking hotel rooms. He does look for places either beforehand for me to smoke in, or he inquires about them. Eg. We usually get a hotel or motel room when travelling with a balcony.

I guess I'm not yet ready yet to stop. I've tried a few times, and I do believe that each time you try to quit, it does get easier.

I know from my past experience that you can't quit because someone else wants you to. It has to be your decision, one you make for yourself. For ME, doing things for other people, then possibly disappointing them, the guilt, the shame...gosh, I could go on. lol It usually leads me to continue the behaviour, in secret a lot of times...it's a horrible cycle to get into. Anyway, sorry for rambling here!

As a smoker I know it's a horrible habit. I know that it's very very bad for me. I try, by smoking outside and only around other smokers to not expose non-smokers to my toxic smoke.
