Hi all. I want to know for sure: Can I travel outside the US if I'm a Permanent Resident awaiting my (physical) green card? Or do I have to wait for the actual green card (piece of plastic)?? Asking because I'd like to return home for Xmas, but I'll enter the USA in November for the first time to get the stamp at the border. Thank you

The I-551 stamp you will receive acts as physical green card for a year. You can work and travel with that.

I heard (somewhere) that you had to wait for the actual green card in the mail to be able to travel outside the US,

What you heard (somewhere) is not correct. Powerpuff has given you the correct info.
