My wife, two boys and myself will be moving to the Philippines to retire. We are USA citizens and she is fillpina.

We will live both Manila and Bacolod (back and forth) majority of our time in Bacolod.

Question: If you had $20,000 usd to invest, what would you invest the miney in for the best return on the money.

I'm looking for a yearly return...not long term. For example, what % could I make on the money the first 12 months.

thanks for any suggestions, websites, opportunites.

God Bless,

USA looking forward to our arrival..

Recently lived and work in the Philippines (Ayala Alabang and Calamba City) If you start a business ,the $20,000 is just about enough to bribe all the officials that you will need to to start up, then you have nothing left. But your not starting a business.

If I were you, live in Bacolod, get a nice big house, open a Sari Sari store with the usual stuff and some unique things. Just be careful not to piss off the other locals near you that have a Sari Sari store, don't push them out of business, if you do, they may come at you with a bolo knife.......LOL Running a Sari Sari will keep your time occupied. If you don't keep yourself busy, you'll be known as the "sira ulu kano" (sp?)

Good luck!!

It depends on what you want to do. You could start a small store out of your house. We set my wife's parents up with funds to do that. I met a woman from CDO who had a uncle and cousin that were raising chickens, lots of chickens. I did an initial investment of $25,000 and that was just enough to buy the land and get one shed built that holds 6000 chickens. Fortunately another friend of mine also invested some money so we now have five buildings and a contract with San Miguel so we do about 7 grows a year. As is stands right now we are neting about $1,000 per grow per building. This isn't easy work from labor or the management side so you really need to find good people to work with you. My partner has since sold her internet cafe and is now living on the farm so she has thrown herself fully into this and now would like to try and buy me out. That is find because I could use the money to fund my in-laws.

You could also look at taxis and jeepneys but there is a lot of over-head there.

Good luck

Samby Says=> MAY??? Make that Segurado! (for Certain!)

Leave your cash in the USA and mutual funds.

Samby Says=> Best Advise!!!

Seriously, $20K doesn't go very far anymore in the NCR (National Capital Region (Manila). In the province, its better. But if your goal is simply to get a short term return on your $20K, leave it in a some kind of US financial investment. If your goal is to spend that money to get something started, like a business that will provide both "something to do" every day and some "food on the table", then your more likely to find success in or around Bacolod.

Best of luck and Good Fortune to you and your family.

Samby

Well, you should check out some open franchise opportunities in the Philippine market.

Franchise businesses are unlikely to get bankrupt. One main reason, Filipinos are getting "branded" nowadays. If the product/services is being offered by a known company, it MUSt be good.

Check here.

have you thought of a visa assistance office?

for those of us that don't want to get ripped by a lawyer. you could charge $100-$300 USD per.

almost all the info is free & on the internet.

you'd need a couple computers, couple printers & a building.

don't know what kind of licences you'll need if any....just a thought, couldn't hurt to look into it.

You may want to check out Jollybee, as they have grown so much the past 10 years and they are doing extreamly well. Maybe even check out other cities such as Cebu, which are very American friendly. Just watch out for some of the small villages, as they get dangerous and there are lots of robberies everyday. Also, I don't know what background you have, but for semi-retired people, a consulting business usually works out very well. Again, you have to think of what will work over there because it is like comparing mayonaise to peanut butter. Two entirely different economies.

I don't think Jolllibee will be good for them if they only have $20K. Jollibee franchise today costs about php10M. My friend's Uncle went into that business about 5 years ago and they were asked for a p10M to have a franchise in Cebu. Their franchise is doing great in Cebu (near SM).

For a $20K - I think a Sari-sari store or like a mini-grocery will be a good way, but not in Metro Manila, your money will go a long way if you will have your business in the province. Also one suggested poultry, I think poultry and piggery will also be a good investment in the province. Good luck!

A friend of mine looked at Jollybee but the franchise fee was a lot more than $20,000.

After living in the P.I. for almost 5 years (retired) I would say that any "business venture" is "risky business" indeed.

There are ways to do it, but it involves setting up an "offshore" account and forming a "corporation" in some place like Belize - but that alone will set you back about 10 to 20 grand.

One of the businesses, my fiance and I are looking forward to do in the next years here in the PI, is the rental apartments/houses in the south side of the metro and in Sabang, Puerto Galera (where bunch of americans stay). The reasons why are: First, I'd been witnessing this business from my parents and I can say that they've never been in the red on this business. Second, they get monthly income/payment. The more units they make the more money they get in return. $20,000 wont be enough though..

This is just our plans and just wanted to share it with ya. Nonetheless, my fiance still wants me to get a Realtor-related course so we can handle this business much preferable to what we have just seen and witnessed.

Good luck!

You were never a mistake. You were my realization.

In 20k dollar for me you can start a small piggery somewhere in bacolod (i mean province area) and have a small (payag) house to monitor your business all the time. poultry or piggery is a very good business. I wont recommend sari-sari store or small grocery its not a good business in the province lots of filipino wants (utang) but they don't pay....lol...(its a shame for us being a filipino but that's true) real estate or apartments for rent is the most booming business in the philippines but you need to have a big money to start.
