I love watching Andrew Zimmern!

He's due in Brazil sometime soon, I wonder what bizarre foods we have that I dunno about.

On the subject, I miss bbqed chicken hearts.

- Bob's fast food joint, with the best milkshake EVER, made with ovaltine.

How I miss that. They have milkshake here everywhere, but the best milkshake ever is Bob's ovaltine milk shake

I'm about to try making it at home, I'll buy some ice cream and olvatine and try to get close to Bob's ovaltine milkshake, but it's really tough, that milkshake is a sin. :)

Luis fell in love with it instantly, as he has, in fact, with everything at Bob's. He always goes like "Wow, this tastes like real food". The sauce they use is way better than other fast food joints. Every single trip Luis takes to Brasil HAS to start with a stop at Bob's. He made me stop at 8 am straight from the airport to get a BigBob, and a ovaltine milkshake.

I've done it. Mix like 8 scoops of vanilla ice cream, some milk and a few spoons of ovaltine in a blender. It doesn't taste the same, but it's still good.

Beer? Then you gotta have shrimp skewers as well. :P

I do miss the good beers in the Netherlands, and the ones they sell there from Germany and Belgium.

A few months ago, my husband and I were at an local Irish pub and my husband asked for the seasonal beer.

The server said: Ho garden. So, I said: What? It almost sounded rude, like you don't want that !!!!

She explained it was a fresh white Belgian beer where you can add a wedge of lemon too.

Oh, I said : You mean Hoegaarden...! I know that beer, I bought it for my husband when he was visiting as my fiance.

She looks at me very disturbed, like as if I can'r pronounce what we are selling.

Phonetically it's said as : Hoo gaahrden. At least the "hoo" bit shouldn't be so hard instead of referring to a garden full of .....

:P

I always have to laugh when I watch a show on e.g. Food Network, where everything has an American pronouncation, as where in the Netherlands we would use the local name and try to pronounce it by it's original name.

It sometimes upsets my husband a bit, when I comment, especially on someone like Rachel Ray, because real chefs use often the right word or pronouncecation. ha ha :innocent:

Nandos!

Aussie BBQ. Which does Not mean Pork. Lamb in general.

Nice Souvlaki. Fresh food. Fish N Chips.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

I totally agree on the HFCS, I just hate that, it's so bad foryou and I won't use it, so it always takes me so long to find products that won't have it in them. Not much choice left, very often.

Even Campbell tomatosoup and Club crackers have it, for what reason???

If you can get to the CDN border (or know someone who frequently crosses), we do not use HFCS in Canada.. :) I stock up when I go home.

He doesn't even miss all the good French cheeses?? I do even miss those,. Cheese is so expensive here if you want the good kinds like the French ones.

He lived in NY as a friar for two years in the past, that's how we met. So he had those two years of eating whatever was donated and set in front of him that got him used to American cheeses. He said when he left the friars and went home he had trouble eating the French cheeses because they were too strong for him. He'll usually run to the cheese aisle when we're food shopping to "play", looking at what's there... but he said he doesn't miss French cheese that much.

If you can find the Canadian Nutella it is the same ingredients as the Euro stuff. There was a whole 2 pages of discussion on this in the German/American thread :) Also, if you have a Word Market, apparently their house Hazelnut spread is almost identical. I still have to try it out.

Ooooh thanks for the tip! Canadian Nutella could be easier to get a hold of. I know I had once found an Italian chocolate/hazelnut spread that was really good at an Italian butcher but it was pretty expensive. But half was vanilla with hazelnut and the other half was chocolate with hazelnut, and I loved both. So we might try to track that down again.

i noticed you were in NY... if you guys ever make it to manhattan, there's a bakery in the west village called "claudes" that has croissants just like in france! to DIE FOR! if you go early they come out of the oven hot and you can eat them right then! they also have some other pastries and cakes. check it out! :) i definitely know what you mean about the croissants being far superior in france. maybe that can help his craving! (also the chef/owner is from france)

Thanks! We'll check that out next time we're in Manhattan. :)

ewww dutch Drops lol.. I tried to eat them but they are not tastyy!!! well. is not from my country but I miss frites met zurvlees, vlai and olliebollen..

from Mexico, I miss my fresh ridiculously cheap FRUIT!!! that's what I miss the most, mexican candy and other snacks can be found here, even the mexican glass bottle Coca Cola.. but other than that.. I miss the fruit, oh and good poblano cuisine, and Tortas AHogadas!!

isn't the nutella that they sell in USA exported from Italia anyway?? or is it made here

I have a recipe for Olliebollen... Its pretty easy to make just takes a long time.

Oliebollen

1 envelope yeast

3/4 cup warm water

1 tsp sugar

Mix together and let rise for 30 minutes. Then mix together,

4 cups flour

2 tsp salt

2 cups warm milk

3 eggs

Then add the yeast mixture. Let rise for 2 hours. If desired, add raisins, cherries or apples. Then drop by teaspoon full into the deep fryer. Turn when underside is browned.
