K1 Passing through Japan

Hello,

My fiance and I were recently K1 approved via interview at the Philippines Consulate. We are now planning travelling together back to the US. I will be flying to the Philippines and we will be flying back. We are thinking of using the ANA airline but am concerned about her going through the airport and being delayed or held up. Am I overthinking this? Would it be better to simply use Philippines Airlines since they would not travel through Japan? I am concerned of potentially being held up in Japan, please advise. Final destination is the U.S.

Thank you

you are overthinking about this.

any reason why u think she will be delay or held up in japan ?

even when she enter US, she will need to go for secondary check anyway

i personally prefer to fly with ANA over Philippines airlines

Mainly because she has a lot of bags to check in. I am thinking to have her ship a lot of her stuff before flying.

I don't quite understand why if you are traveling with her, she will be held up at a transit airport in Japan depending on the airline because of extra bags? Just make sure you are not shipping anything illegal, foods, liquids, etc. and pay for extra baggage if needed?

If you read my Timeline POE review, the only extra thing that I did was to notify the airline(s) (may need to notify each airline if connecting flights) to make an extra note on her flight reservation(s) for the gate agent. The note mentioned she has a 1-way ticket with a K1 visa since nowhere in the flight reservation is the visa information input. It is possible that there is a gate agent not familiar with the K1 visa that will ask for evidence of a round-trip ticket, and get questioned like my K1 fiancee did. As my Timeline POE review mentioned, she got more interrogating questions at the transit airport boarding than the POE CBP agents.

But if you are traveling with her, you should be able to help her handle any situation if needed.

How many bags?  Shipping items to the US could be very expensive.  If she could stuff all her essential items into your combined baggage allowance, I would recommend doing so.

When I moved to the US last year, my layover was also in Japan (NRT airport).  I booked AA/JAL though, not ANA.  I brought 2 checked-in luggage, 1 carry-on travel bag, and 1 laptop bag.  No hassle at NRT airport, but I did have a major backache because I packed as much as I could fit in my hand-carry bags and I was travelling by myself.

Huh?  Why is that an issue in Japan?  My wife brought several large boxes and a lot of baggage through Japan on her flight....No issues at all.

Not really an issue. Once you check your bags in Manila they will end up at your final destination without any intervention in Japan. You should definitely tell your fiance to downsize as much as possible. Between you and her, you are allowed 4 bags at 50lbs each along with 1 carry on each.. Just pack very minimal when you go there.

Just to make sure, you are trying to book a multiple connecting flight that stops in Japan then continues all the way to the US, right? If so, that should not be a problem. Your fiancé should not have an issue with bag in Japan because it will be checked in in Manila airport and you won't get it until point-of-entry in the US. Manila airport will not let her board a flight until her documents and bags are all good.

If you are looking at booking a separate flight from Manila to Japan, then another separate ticket from Japan to US, then this could be a problem as Filipinas would need to a Japan visa to travel to Japan (unlike the transit visa that is already embedded in multiple connecting flight), even though the intention is to transit through Japan to get to the US.

I could be wrong.... but you might want to look at the difference of two ways of booking her flight.
