the Shining is a great movie...

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Initially King was flattered that Kubrick was going to do something of his. Later he expressed disappointment in the film. "There's a lot to like about it. But it's a great big beautiful Cadillac with no motor inside, you can sit in it and you can enjoy the smell of the leather upholstery - the only thing you can't do is drive it anywhere. So I would do everything different. The real problem is that Kubrick set out to make a horror picture with no apparent understanding of the genre. Everything about it screams that from beginning to end, from plot decisions to the final scene - which has been used before on the Twilight Zone"

King had the chance to "do everything different" with the 1997 TV movie adaptation of The Shining which he wrote and produced. However, the TV Shining was poorly received and generally considered to be vastly inferior to the Kubrick version. Friction between Kubrick and King was probably further exacerbated because Kubrick refused King the rights to release his version of The Shining on video.

Recently it has emerged that King used to be an alcoholic, and that parts of The Shining are, if not autobiographical, then very personal for the author. King was annoyed because Kubrick's adaptation, in his eyes, marginalised the book's most important theme: that a good father can be turned into a monster through alcohol abuse.

Back to me: I have, as everyone else here, loved jack in this role. But after I saw the newer version. from a story point of view i find the 1997 version much better.

BTW speaking of a classic jack remake. anyone seen the new joker in the upcoming batman movie?

Check it:

I think it's dumb. Maybe I had too many expectations since I kept hearing that it was such a great movie. I watched and thought "what's the big deal?" Maybe it was back then before we had the scary movies we have now, but it did nothing for me.

I watched The Shinning last week for the first time.

I got so darn scared. Those are the kind of movies that make me jump from my seat. I don't mind gore, but the pshychological part scares me to death.

My husband is lucky he doesn't have bruise on him from my jumping and squeezing him, especially when the cook gets killed. I knew it was coming but still.

Jack Nicholson is impressive in his act. You see him and you know he's going to turn bad, his face just spooks me out all the way trough the movie.

What you say does make me curious about the book though...

I definitely thing the 1997 version was superior. I found Jack's performance to be too over-the-top from the beginning; there wasn't enough of a transistion from his character simply being an alcoholic struggling with violent tendencies to being taken over by the evil of the hotel. He seemed ready to start swinging the axe before ever arriving at the Overlook. Steven Weber's version had much more depth, and was actually a sympathetic character. Shelley Duvall was way too simpering; Rebecca DeMornay's Wendy was a much stronger character. And the ending of the Kubrick version just annoyed me. Was Jack supposed to have been reincarnated or what? It also helped that the 1997 version used the actual hotel that inspired King to write the story.

Interesting read. I actually like it when directors make the story their own, and Kubrick is really good at capturing insanity.
