It’s Sunday, even the wicked need rest.

You have enough ammo by printing links from earlier to keep your job and get your DMV, tomorrow..just point to the black and white, even without a stamp.

Have fun, go get them.

Fun? lol

DMV requires a "unexpired Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551), including an I-94 with attached photo stamped "I-551 Temporary Proof of Lawful Permanent Resident" or a foreign passport stamped "Processed for I-551"

Wow, I didn't need the I-94 with attached photo stamped "I-551 Temporary Proof of Lawful Permanent Resident" last time..  Looks like a trip to Des Moines is inevitable, if they'll take me.

Do you know if the photo needs to be a passport photo?

Like someone suggested, you should apply for citizenship. If you ever got in any sort of trouble with law enforcement (wrong place, wrong time), you could have either difficulty renewing your GC or it could even be revoked. As a permanent resident, you don’t have guaranteed entrance to the U.S. when you come back from a trip. You mentioned you’ve lived here since you were a kid and it sounds like you have your life settled here, so you’re basically American already. Just make it official. Austria doesn’t allow dual citizenship, but it seems you could apply for an exemption (which has to be given before you apply for American citizenship), especially if you are Austrian-born. I think it is worth a try.

There might be many reasons why someone does not want to apply for citizenship.

If you’re a PR with a valid GC, extension letter, or I-551 stamp, coming back shouldn’t be an issue.

And ultimately, your employer shouldn’t fire you because of an expired GC.
To OP: you should call the 800 number, say “info pass” or “technical difficulties “, and go from there.

DMV is more powerful then CBP at a land POE! ?? I live and learn. ( You can enter the US w expired card and extension)
No fun / pun intended but it just dawned on me how frustrating this must be for many.

 No it was valid..

Get something in writing that says you will be fired for having an expired green card.  Then when you are fired you have grounds for a lawsuit as what your employer is threatening to do is illegal.   There is no leeway here for your employer. It’s an open and shut case and a racist employer will pay the price.

Call for I-551 stamp?  🙄  Ive never talked to a human when I call 800-375-5283..  I don't have a valid passport.  Ive lived in the states since I was a infant..

To get a human, call USCIS, say “info pass”

You don’t have to have a passport to get an I-551 stamp. USCIS will provide alternate form factor.  I believe it is an I-94 with an I-551 stamp.

You might be able to enter the USA by land with an expired 2 year green card and an expired extension letter. Makes sense since CBP has authority to issue I-551 stamps.

But airlines are subject to fines by CBP if they board such passengers.  I’ve read a story of it happening once from a preclearance airport in Canada but presumably in that case CBP waived the fine.

If you are caught outside with an expired 2 year green feed and an expired extension letter, you are up the proverbial creek without a paddle. You can try I-131a but you are now depending the whims of the state department.

😀 I finally spoke to a human after saying "infopass". After I explained I'm not so worried about the GC, but will lose my job if I lose my drivers license, he apologized and set up a emergency appointment at the des moines office. I have yet to hear from them, but have been told I will within 72 hours.

Thanks for all the information and support!

  • 2 weeks later...

I just returned from the Des Moines field office with my temporary green card, which will allow me to renew my drivers license friday.  My anxiety has all but disappeared.

But I thought I might explain to you kind folks why it's taken 18 months to get the green card..   The agent told me it's because they put all 3 million illegal's that were allowed to cross the mexican boarder in the front of the line!  Read between the lines and my anxiety just skipped up a notch.

Thanks again!

Somewhere in Des Moines a USCIS officer is getting a reprimand for deviating from the narrative.
