Hello folks, new here and lived in the US for most of my life..

I created a account at uscis and sent in all the required documents and $540 fee 18 months ago because the offices are closed due to covid. I have asked uscis why it is taking so long and was told GC "is pending and is within our current processing time." My employer has threatened to fire me.. My drivers license will expire soon and Ive read I need a non expired GC to renew it. If I don't have a drivers license I will lose my job.. Ive read on FB that I'm not the only one waiting over a year, some for over two years.

What is going on here? Why is the renewal taking so long? Will I lose my license, and then my job?

Thanks!

Was your green  card expired when you got the job?

You will need to call USCIS, say “info pass”, and request an I-551 stamp.  With this stamp you can renew your drivers license.

Your employer cannot fire you. Show him the extension.

As far as I know, ROC is $680 and cannot be done online. Why did you pay $540?

I hope you filed an I-751 and not I-90.

With $540, seems to me that you filed an I-90.

Immigration journey is not: fast, for the faint at heart, easy, cheap, for the impatient nor right away. If more than 50% of this applies to you, best get off the bus.

Did your employer threaten to fire you purely for the expired GC? Or because of a lack of DL as a result of the GC situation?

What form did you file?

If you had a 10 yr card and filed an I-90 renewal, then do as @Mike E posted and get a stamp. Look up your states DMV req identity docs . In CA you can get a Real ID w just the I-551 stamp.

BUT, of course that would require you to have a valid passport from your country of origin …unless at InfoPass you INSIST and obtain the stamp on something other than ..passport ( I.e. old stickers on back of expired card, an I-94 style paper) ..what has anyone obtained recently?

Time for N-400!

I did file a I-90 because uscis says " Renew or Replace My Green Card"  Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card;

https://www.uscis.gov/forms/explore-my-options/renew-or-replace-my-green-card

Yes GC was valid for a year after I was hired..  Thanks for the info on I-551 stamp.  I sure hope it comes faster because if its another 18 months, I'm out of luck..

My employer threatened to fire me purely for the expired GC.  My DL will expire middle of august.

Thanks folks!

Are you replacing a 10  or 2 years GC?

This is for your employer, acceptable I-9 verification ( smaller co not one e-verify are a bit scared and don’t have hr or legal reps for compliance)

https://www.uscis.gov/i-9-central/form-i-9-acceptable-documents

https://www.uscis.gov/i-9-central/form-i-9-resources/handbook-for-employers-m-274/120-acceptable-documents-for-verifying-employment-authorization-and-identity

This is an example of how to deal w DMV ( ca ) look up your state

https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/real-id/how-do-i-get-a-real-id/real-id-checklist/

Try the by hook or crook method of getting InfoPass ( one example)

Excellent question. OP skip , Starbucks and give up any disposable income meant for fun, beg or borrow f need be, but do N-400 now. As LPR you remain vulnerable to being in the wrong place, wrong time , wrong people …DV Amber Alert if you tick off your beloved or on a serious note get into any legal scrapes that have immigration consequences.

Thanks again..   I'll read and watch the links you so kindly provided..

10 year GC.  I have never applied for citizenship.  I never had a problem getting/paying for a renewal because I'm proud to be a Austrian. I was in the military, could buy a gun etc.  Only thing I couldn't do was vote, so I'm wondering what you mean when you say I "remain vulnerable to being in the wrong place, wrong time , wrong people …DV Amber Alert if you tick off your beloved or on a serious note get into any legal scrapes that have immigration consequences." ?
