Hi, everyone,

I'm a first-time poster (in fact, I just signed up today), so please forgive me if this has already been covered or seems a stupid question.

My husband and I are going for our greencard interview on Friday. I'm a natural-born U.S. citizen; he's from Scotland. Luckily, we have evidence of our life together--numerous emails, letters addressed to him here, bank statements together, joint gym membership, a cell phone plan together, photos, etc. We have all the letters we've ever received from USCIS, as well as our marriage license (and a certified copy), passports for each of us, my driver's license and SS# card. He also has a great job offer pending being given a SS#. However, as we were getting our paperwork together, we discovered we don't have his birth certificate from the UK. His mother, who is still in Scotland, never had the original and had to contact the governmental department there to get a certified copy of his birth certificate, which we then sent in with our original application. I'm worried, though. On the checklist provided with the letter notifying us of our interview, it states he should bring his birth certificate. As he doesn't have the original, and we already turned in the official copy, should we be concerned? As the USCIS already has his birth certificate, will we be able to explain the situation?

I'm sorry for all the questions. I'm just so nervous and I almost had a panic attack when I realized today that he doesn't have his birth certificate and the copy is already with the USCIS. Has anyone run into a similar situation?

Thanks!

Hi!

The Immigration officer at your interview will have that official copy of your husband's birth certificate. Tell him/her that it's the only original you have. You shouldn't have any issues.

You should have sent a photocopy of that official copy with your AOS, but since you sent the original, there's nothing more you can show to the IO :) What they tend to do at the interview is go through the paperwork you mailed them, and ask you to show the originals of the documents like the marriage certificate, birth certificate, etc. And seems like they already have the originals on file.

Good luck! :)

i think the only option would be is that if ever they will ask then you'll tell them the reason... i brought my bc both original and copy during my interview but they never ask for it so i hope they wont too, during yours. just bring his passport coz they will surely ask for it and its very important to bring it... anyways as jewel have said they already have a copy for it. good luck

Thank you both! I hope it doesn't become a major problem--I know a birth certificate is a major piece of identification, but we have his passport and our marriage license. I'm hoping if we explain the situation, the IO is understanding and will overlook it in light of all the other evidence we have.

Just three days more now!

Like the others said, the officer should have it, but they have been known to lose things before so in that case they would probably just give you an RFE until such time as you could get another copy of it. Just remember in the future to only send official copies of things when they ask but otherwise just send photocopies and keep those originals! :)

If they give you a RFE in the interview, what do you do? Just mail it when you prepare the RFE? How long does it take to complete the process after the RFE assuming that your name is clear in FBI name check.

I have a similar issue. I have an interview at the end of August. In the paper says that "bring a copy of medical exam (I-693?) unless you didnt submit it".

I submitted it with my original application. Everybody in VJ forum says bring a copy of everything you submitted when you go to interview. I dont have any other copy, (Well I had one extra copy, I opened the envelope to see everything was right!!), the doctor asks 50$ extra for a new copy.

I am planning not take a copy with me to interview, if they ask, i will tell them i submitted before. in the worst case, they will give me an RFE right?

What would you do?

Thanks,

Kaan.

You do have photocopies right , of the entire package sent?

Bring that one, because the are the same. And most of the time if you present the copy to them, they'll give you the originals back.

That's what happened to us.

I was going to suggest a swap. You may need that certified copy.

Most people do not have a copy of their medical so that is an exception to the "bring a copy of everything" rule on VJ. If they give you an RFE at the interview you do like you do with a regular RFE, as you said, you just get the info and send it back. No idea how long it takes to complete the process if namechecks have finished, one would think not that long but who knows.

You can't bring a copy of the I-693 - that was in the sealed envelope taken at the POE by the IO. I have no clue why they would tell you to bring a copy of that - that's weird.
