I485 parents name at birth

Is the meaning parent's name at their birth or parent's name at the applicant's birth?

Presumably it should be the applicant's birth since it is being supported by the applicant's birth certificate and no such certificate is being asked of the applicants parents. However, the grammar in the instruction makes it a bit murky.

it is the name the parent was given when the parent was born.

Some people file I-485 not realizing they are already US citizens or LPRs.

Hi Mike,

Thank you. I am not sure what you were referring to in your second sentence there.

As for the parent's name thing - where does it say it is at the parent's birth and not the applicant's birth? It merely says "paren't's name at birth (if different than above)"

In the example I referenced, it is clear that the name at birth is as I stated.

As to my second sentence the point is that USCIS can determine if a parent was a U.S. citizen or also at and if so, if the applicant is already a U.S. citizen or LPR.

This is information about the parents, the little footnote "at Birth if different than above" means their birthname before the above name was changed if it is different. not talking about the applicant. Do not read into questions.
