What's next for Sri Lanka as angry protesters occupy their leaders' luxury houses?

 

Angry protesters who stormed the official residences of Sri Lanka's President and Prime Minister succeeded in forcing them to resign on the weekend as the country lurches further into crisis.

 

However, the protesters say they won't leave the luxury houses until both leaders have vacated their roles. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is expected to step down on Wednesday, while Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe tweeted his resignation Saturday but didn't confirm his date of departure.

 

The resignations mark a major win for protesters, but the future of the country's 22 million people is uncertain as they struggle to buy basic goods, fuel and medicine.

Sri Lanka says IMF talks near end after declaring state of emergency

 

COLOMBO, July 18 (Reuters) - Sri Lanka's acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe said on Monday that the country had almost concluded negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), a day after he declared a state of emergency in the island nation.

 

"The acting president further explained that negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) were nearing conclusion, and discussions for assistance with foreign countries were also progressing," Wickremesinghe's office said in a statement.

I was in Sri Lanka in 1999 and can sort of guess the dynamics, the Green thing was more that they imported fertilizer and the family firm had pilfered the foreign currency reserves.

 

I assume a lot of their borrowing is dollar demoninaated and with increasing interest rates, falling exchange rates they are going to hurt big time. Of course they are not alone.

 

There was a story on the radio yesterday about a couple who were going to Europe for their 25th Anniversary as it was cheaper than going somewhere in the US, Euro is now below parity.

 

World of hurt coming, Biden's attempt to fix his crew ups will have a very nasty effect.

 

Could be chilly in Germany this winter, they do not have enough to get through the winter, and Sri Lanka is competing in the same market, good luck.
