UPS Cancelling Gun Dealers’ Accounts, Destroying Packages in Transit

In a letter sent to one Florida gun dealer, Ghost Firearms, UPS said they were terminating the account because they “may be violating” laws concerning homemade firearm parts.

 

“We write to inform you that UPS has learned that your company may be violating applicable laws concerning the shipment of “ghost guns” to unauthorized locations,” the letter states. “In light of our concern, UPS has determined that it will cancel your account, effective immediately.”

Ghost’s owner, Joe Zatar was told all scheduled pickups will be canceled, and that he cannot reopen another UPS account or ship anything from a UPS store or website.

He is most concerned about the packages already in the UPS system, which he may have already lost.

“Please note that any package found in the UPS system determined to have been tendered by GHOST FIREARMS may be seized and destroyed,” the letter states.

“I just shipped more than $30,000 worth of products,” he said.

Important part of the notice from UPS to several major shippers is the part that says  

"unless those items have been identified and given a serial number in compliance with federal requirements"

 

“UPS’s policy now clarifies that the company does not accept any firearms, frames or receivers, or partially complete, disassembled, or nonfunctional frames or receivers (as defined by the new federal regulation) unless those items have been identified and given a serial number in compliance with federal requirements,” the company statement said.

Firearms industry sources say UPS has sent similar compliance letters to multiple businesses across the country, including some of the largest online retailers of components used to make ghost guns. And there’s concern that other mail carriers could follow suit, potentially disrupting the supply chain as political blowback builds following a spate of horrific mass shootings.

 

i own a handgun and it is registered and bought legally and has no modifications

I get it if UPS wants to get out of the gun shipping business.  But to destroy a shipment already in the works?  Sounds illegal to me.

Most gun parts don't have nor require a serial number.  And how can they tell that thru the carboard?

I completely agree, how can UPS take ownership of material.
