Will SNAP benefits affect family members immigration applications?

Hi all,

I am currently a permanent green card holder, and my citizen husband wants to apply for SNAP benefits. We both are unemployed over a year now. I plan to apply for my child to America in a few years. I wonder if claiming SNAP benefits will cause any problem on his immigration process further down the road. Does it show anywhere on the government website?

    Thank you!

Hi Emily, thank you for your reply.

I don't concern much about whether or not I can get the SNAP benefits. I am afraid getting the benefits will interfere with my son's immigration process down the road.

I came here with a K1 visa, and I plan to apply for my son to come in the future.

Applying for or receiving SNAP does not make you a public charge and will not be considered in a public charge determination.

It won't hurt your child's case as long as by the time you apply you're back on your feet again and can meet the income requirements.

Yes, I think this is the key point, it’s not that you received SNAP benefits but that if you are eligible for SNAP you likely womt meet the income requirements to sponsor an immigrant.
