If I have to relocate temporarily for 3 months for an internship, do I need to inform UCIS?

Long term means a long time.

Even if you do decide to sell your house, while you bought it and live in it and you have the intention of staying in it(that may, of course, change over time), you consider that your permanent address. For that time.

What does long time mean?

You want to rationalize your decision to not comply with a law by using imprecise terms. You are a free agent.

I appreciate everyone's time taken to respond. I can see sense in all the replies. People have made a lot of valid points.

The fact that it is a paid internship seems to be something to consider because of tax stuff, although I am not sure how that would affect USCIS things as paying tax seems a separate thing to do.

I haven't accepted the internship position yet. I am still weighing people's advice and benefits / risks and what seems to be the overall recommendation of what to do before I make a choice.

A long time is probably a year or more. Again, a long time can be considered differently to different people.

I tend to live places for multiple years at a time. To me, that's a long time.

6 months or under would be a short time. In my mind.

Well if you can find anything in INA or in an INA related court case that supports this definition you are golden.

Matter of  OF V—R-

In DEPORTATION Proceedings
A-11622973
Decided by Board July 5, 1961

“One is deportable for failure to comply with section 265 only if the lack of compliance is willful or without reasonable cause.”

OP’s plan to not comply is willful and without reasonable cause. And yet OP and several others are advocating a criminal act.

I’m out.

So if I fill in the form, will they send any confirmation letter to the address where my husband is in the meantime, if I keep that as my mailing address?

Your main concern looks like it may be related to the impact living in different states may have on your future I-751 filing…if so you can get more circumstance specific input .
You don’t need to file AR-11 to report your  every physical move ( let’s say one goes to see grandma for 3 weeks but stays there for 3 months), if your permanent residence ( that you and spouse jointly pay for) does not change.

I would argue that it is with reasonable cause due to the short term nature of the change AND the fact that they will be returning to their current address. You honestly think OP would get deported for not updating USCIS of an address they stayed at for 12 weeks while their address on file was still their permanent address?

I am ABSOLUTELY NOT advocating a "criminal act", I am saying the law is not remotely clear in how it applies to the OP's situation and my interpretation of the law is that it would not apply to their situation. Clearly you interpret it differently.

I wouldn't change it. Your husband can get your mail. Even when people relocate to college for four years, they don't change their permanent address.

Nice scare tactics using a 1961 deportation case of a person who entered US as a stowaway (illegally).

To OP: For those 3 months stay,

Will you be changing address on your DL, banks, and such? There's your answer on what to do with uscis.

No, I won't be changing my address for banks and stuff because my husband is there to receive my mail and I will be back shortly.

Although I love whenever anyone actually provides cites to back up their position, @arken is correct inasmuch as this case is nothing like OPs AR-11 query.
@Mike E case cite is for someone who was dodging immigration, while OP clearly has a “ permanent residence “ on record.

Plus , even failure to register, does not render alien inadmissible ( deportable )..

Then that’s your answer.
You are not relocating permanently.
If it’s something that you want to do, do not stop just because of USCIS.

They are not going to ask you what’s the purpose of your visit. And even if they did, you should say it’s a short- term internship.
No, you’re not going to get deported .

In fact, if you do change the address and change it back, their system is so finicky that you might end up receiving important notices in your temporary address after you leave. So don’t.
